4.4 upgrade problems

OK ... there has been an awful lot of attributing problems to the 4.4 upgrade that are not really upgrade problems. The best I can tell there is really only one major problem: 1. You need to install python-sqlite before sqlite (or at nearly the same time). To accomplish this you can do this: yum update python-sqlite sqlite Then after that, a normal yum update works fine. There are 2 other potential problems 2. There are other (hardware specific issues) concerning the 2.6.9-42 (or 42.0.2) kernel and some users. This is going to happen every kernel upgrade cycle. 3. There are sometimes futex issues ... that is a generic error that can be caused by many things, usually it is a somehow messed up rpm database with double RPMS installed or another problem. Maybe sometimes it just happens, it has been so since at least RH8. Other than that, I don't see any other problems. (Except that some people have more than 1 version of an RPM in their rpm database ... and when they try to update now, there is a version conflict.) I have now upgraded 30 production servers and several dozen workstations and have had no problems at all. Some people are creating their own issues by doing piecemeal upgrades ... that is to be expected. CentOS does not control how the upstream provider releases its product (there are 195 packages updated, for example), nor do we control when the release stuff or what they build it on. I can tell you, however that some things do not work with older releases ... though they are not necessarily listed as requirements. An example is audit and the audit libs. They don't work properly with all released kernels. A CentOS-4.x update is CentOS-4 ... CentOS-4.4 is a point in time snapshot ... nothing more. Installing CentOS-4.2 (as an example) and only doing security updates after that is not tested as working or recommended (by CentOS or by the upstream provider). As Lance said, in the future the upstream provider is going to create different channels for different snapshots and when they do, we will as well (4.5.0, 4.5.1, 4.5.2, etc.). Until that time (just like upstream), there is only a authorized CentOS-4 version ... and it is CentOS-4.x installed and all the updates applied. ---------------------------------------------- There was also a comment that these issues on not on the upstream mailing list so they must be happening only on CentOS. This is also not true. The upstream provider tells everyone to "Handle it via Support Calls" and not the Mailing List ... and sometimes not even via the public bugzilla. As an example see this: https://www.redhat.com/archives/anaconda-devel-list/2006-August/msg00073.ht… Then they create proprietary (non public) bugzilla entries to track and fix issues. That is their prerogative, however because of that not all fixes are done in public view. We try to move these things also into the public view (again ... in the above example): https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=202446 To assume that just because something is not on the upstream mailing list or upstream public bugzilla that it is not a known upstream issue and being worked upstream is incorrect. The python-sqlite issue is not an upstream issue ... as they don't use yum or sqlite ... however all other issues I have seen are. Thanks, Johnny Hughes

can't copy file.

i mount a windows share like this: mount -t smbfs -o iocharset=gb2312,codepage=936,username=administrator //192.168.10.27/cvs /mnt/windows and try to copy file from /mnt/windows to my local disk. but if came to file with chinese name it always told me "cp: can't creat normal file , invalid argument." by the way i can see the file name (in chinese), and here is my locale: LANG=zh_CN LC_CTYPE="zh_CN" LC_NUMERIC="zh_CN" LC_TIME="zh_CN" LC_COLLATE="zh_CN" LC_MONETARY="zh_CN" LC_MESSAGES="zh_CN" LC_PAPER="zh_CN" LC_NAME="zh_CN" LC_ADDRESS="zh_CN" LC_TELEPHONE="zh_CN" LC_MEASUREMENT="zh_CN" LC_IDENTIFICATION="zh_CN" LC_ALL= i try all possible charset utf-8,gbk,cp936,or gb2312. i have focus on this tow days,if i still can't solve this i will crazy. thanks fro any help!

CPU usage

Does anyone have an idea why cpu usage varies constantly, from as low as 4.X % to as high as 20+%? All that I have open at the time of running "top" is the gnome-terminal. The reason why I'm hunting this, is that I just can't seem to play DVD's (using Xine) without choppy playback (sound is fine). I know my laptop is aching - running CentOS 4.4 with a Celeron 800 and 256MB RAM (DMA's turned on), but still - I think it should be able to play DVD's, or not? I have the feeling that the more I can tweak CPU usage, the better my chance of success will be. Any advice would be appreciated.

ISPConfig: Secure on Centos?

Just wanted to see if this tool was approved or disapproved of in the centos community as far as security is concerned. http://www.ispconfig.org/ I have noted that anything that is not a centos package is probably suspect, -so feel free to assure, or warn, at your leisure. Basically we are looking for a secure GUI based DNS admin tool, (I myself prefer an openbsd or centos dns machine and tyo just edit by hand.) Most of the GUI tools still need for you to change the serial or not forget a dot at the end, so the GUI case is not as compelling to me as it is our firm and it's customer base. -karl

CentOS 4.4, libstdc++ 3.4.6 and NPTL

Hi, I have been using CentOS 4 on a UML (User-Mode Linux) box for some time (>1 year) and have kept up to date with updates. I think I started on CentOS 4.1 and have progressively "yum update"'d since. User-Mode Linux, or at least the version of it that my hosts use, doesn't support NPTL. This hasn't been a problem to date; I've just moved /lib/tls out of the way, as described in http://www.mythic-beasts.com/umlwiki/wiki.pl?2.6_And_TLS . No problems at all, until a recent libstdc++ update. The old version was: libstdc++-3.4.5-2 but with an update to CentOS 4.4 the new version is: libstdc++-3.4.6-3 Now, with the 3.4.6-3 version, when I restart Apache, I get: Cannot load /etc/httpd/modules/libphp4.so into server: libstdc++.so.6: cannot handle TLS data. Reverting back to the old libstdc++ makes things work fine again. In both instances my /lib/tls is empty. Can anyone offer any advice? Is this a bug in the libstdc++ package? Is there a likely workaround? I'm afraid I don't know enough about NPTL/libstdc++ to really understand the details of what's going on here. Thanks, Tim

NPTL problem on Centos 4.4

Not sure where to ask this, I've been googling and not finding much that is helpful. At work I've got a multi-threaded program targeted at Linux. It compiles on RHEL 2.1 and 3, and is targeted at 2.1, 3, and 4. UP until today, the binary built on 3 has worked fine on 4. But on RHEL4 update 4 it dies a horrible death in pthread_create. I have reproduced the problem on Centos 4.4, where I am tyring to debug it. I thought it might be some newly-introduced binary incompatibility in the U4 update, so I recompiled it on Centos 4.4, and it does the same thing. This code has been running for 5 years both in-house and at dozens of customers, on versions of RH linux ranging from 6.2, and 7.x, as well as RHEL 2.1 and 3, so I'm leaning toward something that is not a blatant bug in the code. Anyway, on the either the 2nd or the 3rd (doesn't seem to be consistently one or the other) call to pthread_create we get a SIGSEGV, and looking at a stack backtrace the stack appears to be trashed, or at least the backtrace does not reflect reality. Single-stepping into the call doesn't get you anywhere except a sigsegv. I'm about to delve into it at the instruction level, but I must admit I'm not very knowledeable about 32-bit intel assembly language. Needless to say I've read and re-read and re-re-read the man page for pthread_create(), and have been tweaking the calling sequence in subtle ways to see if I can change the behavior, but so far to no avail. Has anyone here any knowledge of possible problems or incompatibilities in the NPTL implementation in 4.4? Hi, The regular php distributed with centos 4.x is 4.x with php 5.0.x provided from extras/plus. It seems that we are weeks (a month?) away from 5.2.0. Are there any plans to upgrade those packages to 5.1 or 5.2? Thanks.
