yum consumes machine (load average soars to 47)

I was using yum to update packages a few nights ago on one of my servers. The update of rpm packages appeared to die. Since then, commands like 'yum check-update' will consume the system. This is a dual-core Pentium-D, with X64 (and I'm running 64 bit). One CPU pegs at 100% running yum, but whatever it's doing on disk really is the bigger issue. It so consumes the disk subsystem as everything else grinds to a halt and the system becomes unusable (likely swapping itself silly). I'd really like to get this resovled and apply errata. What I need to know is where to start looking. I've tried a 'yum clean all' but that doesn't help. wiping of unused space on ext3

Hello, I was asked if it is possible to zero unused space in ext3 partition? Users write to the server via Samba and are far from computer geeks so teaching them to use some safedelete utility is quite impossible. Is there some way or utility to wipe out all the data from unused space? Thanks, Mindaugas

Command ls blocked on usbdrive

Hi. In the /etc/fstab I have the next line for an usbdrive (IOMEGA USB 2.0 80 Gb): /dev/sda1 /media/IOMEGA_HDD vfat pamconsole,exec,noauto,managed 0 0 I mounted the usbdrive with mount /media/IOMEGA_HDD. If I executed an ls command for one of the directories on the usbdrive (ls /media/IOMEGA_HDD) there is not problem but if I executed an ls of the usbdrive ls -lha /media/IOMEGA_HDD/ it takes aproximately more than five minutes to execute the command. I am running RHEL 4.4 and CentOS 4.4, I dont run Apache only Lighttpd. How do I compile php from php.srpm without apache support? Well I have been compiling php from srpm like this forever rpmbuild -ba --target=i686 php.spec But today it somehow bugged me, I dont use apache on this server. But its asking me to install httpd and httpd-devel to compile. Isnt there a syntax to skip the apache stuff? Thx

Centos 2.1 and Grub Error 28

Hi, I just install Centos 2.1 in an Asus A7N266-VM All went fine until I rebooted for the first time, I get the error en grub: Stage2: Error 28: Selected item cannot fit into memory Can this be a problem with the motherboard? How do we handle panics? Bug it here or RH or ignore it (been around *long* time apparently)?

"Unable to handle kernel paging request". I've saved the OOPS data from the logs for 6 panics since the 4.4 update. Two before I turned on DRI for my radeon (why not? Couldn't be any less "stable"). Did my google work and became aware it is a long-standing unfixed problem (at least through kernel 2.6.15? IIRC). I've started reading what I can find on crash to see if I can get the whole thing. Do we have a kernel with debug symbols and associated? I don't know if I'll pursue this. Disabled swap and that seems to be working. I'm fortunate I can do this. Others may not be so lucky. I'd like to turn swap back on, but I'll probably have to disable all that read-ahead stuff again and find the thread on the swappiness switch and try and find the list of kernel parameters *again* (I know there in here somewhere)... Enough griping for today. Do I bugzilla CentOS, RH or ignore it? TIA, -- Bill

Hi, I installed kernel version 2.6.9-42.0.2.plus.c4 a few days ago .my home partition is formatted with xfs .But this version is refusing to recognize xfs filesystem.the version before that(2.6.9-34.108.plus.c4) is working fine. Do anyhave any idea what is going on.Arent all centos plus kernel supposed to have support for xfs and ntfs etc. Regarda, Alok.

can't copy file with chinese name.

i mount a windows share like this: mount -t smbfs -o iocharset=gb2312,codepage=936,username=administrator //192.168.10.27/cvs /mnt/windows and try to copy file from /mnt/windows . but it always told me "cp: con't creat normal file , invalid argument." and here is my locale: LANG=zh_CN LC_CTYPE="zh_CN" LC_NUMERIC="zh_CN" LC_TIME="zh_CN" LC_COLLATE="zh_CN" LC_MONETARY="zh_CN" LC_MESSAGES="zh_CN" LC_PAPER="zh_CN" LC_NAME="zh_CN" LC_ADDRESS="zh_CN" LC_TELEPHONE="zh_CN" LC_MEASUREMENT="zh_CN" LC_IDENTIFICATION="zh_CN" LC_ALL= i try all possible charset utf-8,gbk,cp936,or gb2312. i have focus on this tow days,if i still can't solve this i will crazy. thanks fro any help!

autofs in CentOS-4.4

There is a bug introduced in autofs which breaks maps which are not stored in /etc. There is a patch but no official update yet.
