Installer ISO with testing kernel?

We're trying to install CentOS 4 on an ASUS P5RD1-VM motherboard, which has the ULI M1573 chipset. This means we need the sata_uli driver, which will be in RHEL4u4 and thus is (I think) in the testing kernel currently available from CentOS. However, that doesn't get us past the fact that the installer doesn't recognize the drives. Does anyone have a recommendation for how we can get this install to work? Can we somehow build an ISO containing the testing kernels? Any other suggestions for how we might get CentOS up and running on this machine before the release of 4.4?

Vnc Problems

Hi I have a Centos server running and have been vncing into it for a couple of months. A while back I was admining another server thru it using firefox. The browser crashed and several services crashed in Centos as well. Ever since then I get the bottom menu in Gnome but none of the open programs show up in it. So If I minimize a program it is gone, and I can't open it again from the desktop. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can fix this. Thanks Mace

unable to write files bigger than 4GB over NFS

This may not be a CentOS problem, because I'm in a mixed environment. But I put it out in case anybody has any thoughts. I recently replaced a file server, which was on a Pentium III based system running 32-bit CentOS 4.3, with an Opteron based system running Fedora 4. The NFS clients are all CentOS 4.3, some are 32 bit and some are 64 bit. Since the replacement, when I try to write a big file from the 32bit CentOS boxes over NFS to the server, I get "filesize exceed messages" at 2GB. However this used to work with the old server. And I can write big files if I'm logged on to the server. One more oddity, the shared file system on the server is xfs formatted; if I instead mount a reiserfs file system I can successfully write. This part does not make sense to me. And one more, I can write large files from a 32-bit Fedora 4 system to the server over NFS, just not from 32-bit CentOS. I'm exporting with (rw,async) and mounting with (bg,rsize=8192,wsize=8192) Is there some interaction between nfs and xfs that I need to know about? Thanks, Tony Schreiner Boston College

Syslog

Something has killed any writes to /var/log/messages. Syslogd is running. Has been off for some time and I just discovered it. Any hints as to what / where to look since syslogd is running? If Trying to Recover a Damaged Partition: kbs-CentOS-Extras Has a Tool

Recently (and for ages, I'm sure) folks have suffered partition destruction and had to try and recover. In the recent thread, the victim eventually had to resort to Google and fond some package that I can not remember now. Well, I was perusing my YumInfo.lst.05, for general info, and I discovered this (potential) little gem. Thought I would pass it on and make it "more googleable" by adding a few keywords at the end of this. Here's the info summary. Name : testdisk Arch : i386 Version: 6.3 Release: 1.el4.kb Size : 480 k Repo : kbs-CentOS-Extras Summary: Tool to check and undelete partition Description: Tool to check and undelete partition. Works with FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, EXT2, EXT3, BeFS, CramFS, HFS, JFS, Linux Raid, Linux Swap, LVM, LVM2, NSS, ReiserFS, UFS, XFS I hope it actually "looks for file-system key stuff" instead of just examining the damaged blocks (often just missing the 0x05 (?) valid flag). If so, it looks "Mahvelous Dahling!" to me. We just need to get some time to exercise this, create some test cases and find out how really good it is. As time permits, I'll do some of that, as I'm reconfig bunch of stuff all the time and have some old small disks (and systems to match that I can resurrect... Windows95 from Genuine floppies anybody?) and the interest. I'll add to this thread as things are discovered. Anyone who has done this already, or has firsthand experience, can allow me to continue my on-going learning of new stuff by reporting on this package so I don't invest the time to evaluate this properly. e1000 nic problem

Hi, I've been experiencing occassional network time-outs with the Intel Gigabit nic's (e1000) in Poweredge systems. I'm not sure if it's a hard or software problem but it occurs on different systems with Centos 4.2 and 4.3 and was wondering if there' s a workaround available like compiling an updated e1000 module or something. kind regards, Geert
