Method for autoinstalling new updates at install time (or very near to it)

I have CentOS 4.3 as well as RHEL4u3 and FC5 setup on my PXE/HTTP Server automating the install process. However, I'd also like to apply any post update RPMS during installation also. Is there any easy method to do this with out having to recreate the hdlist and other installation files? My desire would be to have a updates directory that I can put packages into and CentOS would check to see if a newer version of the RPM exists in /updates. Any thoughts? My goal is to get away from the need to download 200+ megabytes of updates after each install. I know I could setup my own yum updates server and then point each new install at that instead of the mirrors but I wanted something slightly more automated. Can anyone else tell me how their doing this? Jay

dovecot vs Cyrus-Imapd

I'm just preparing to build a new mail server for use at an ISP handling over 10,000 mailboxes and several domains. We're currently using Qmail, but we'd like to move away from that since we have now changed our inbound mail systems over to Postfix. Postfix will be receiving the mail, and I'm trying to decide between Dovecot and Cyrus-Imapd for the POP & IMAP service. Does anybody have any advice or opinions about which of these two packages would be better for a large installation. I'd prefer if the package could tie into MySQL for user authentication, and all mailboxes will be virtual in the sense that they won't have local system accounts. Thanks for your help. Bob.

Server spontaneously rebooting under RHEL-4

Hey, y'all! :) I've got an RHEL-4 server (yep, I know it's not CentOS, but hey we gotta send some money RH's way to keep CentOS up and going! ) that's running Oracle 10g. This same hardware worked just fine for over a year running RHEL-AS-2.1 and Oracle 9i. Now we're getting spontaneous reboots when running oracle processes that eat up a bunch of resources. I don't know where to go from here. It's got dual hyper-threading processors set to hyperthreading mode, and I understand that the 2.6 kernel used to have HT issues, but I thought that'd been solved. The kernel we're running is: 2.6.9-22.0.2.ELsmp (yeah, not the latest, I haven't had a chance lately to test and update the patches). I think the kernel settings are correct, what with 4gigs of ram: [root@sibrsdbs etc]# cat sysctl.conf # Kernel sysctl configuration file for Red Hat Linux # # For binary values, 0 is disabled, 1 is enabled. High CPU usage for migration kernel process

I've got a CentOS 4.3 box here which is exhibiting crazy (I think) CPU load on one of the four migration kernel processes: # ps ax | grep migration 2 ? S 0:08 [migration/0] 4 ? S 112:23 [migration/1] 6 ? S 2:48 [migration/2] 8 ? S 0:11 [migration/3] It's running kernel 2.6.9-34.ELsmp. Does anyone have any idea what might cause that? Thanks :) -- Andy Armstrong, hexten.net

Another server hosed

Hi, Just upgraded a remote 4.1 server [basically Samba] with yum update. Went through the process and every showed OK, when I did a restart, the only thing working is ping. I could ping it, but that's it. Could not connect anymore through SSH, could not connect through SMB. My smb.conf is still there and it still shows my settings. Testparm -L reports the correct info, but nobody can connect. I now have the server being shipped back. Not able to install Centos 4.2

Hi, Last week I bought a new system & downloaded Centos 4.2. Here is the detailed configuration of the PC: a) Seagate 80GB Sata HDD: Model Number:ST3808110AS b) ASUS ADN-VM Mother board c) AMD 3000+ 64bit d) Other things are common & dont think they are required in this context. I am not able to install Centos 4.2. After the step to check install media, I get this message: "No hard drives have been found. You probably need to manually choose device drivers for the installation to succeed. Would you like to select drivers now?" If I choose yes, I am shown a list of device drivers. I tried some of them, but nothing worked. I have tried installing both 32 bit & 64 bit versions of Centos 4.2. Each of them gave the same message. I googled a bit, but could not get anything to work for me. The HDD is installed properly. I was able to install another flavor of Linux (Mandriva). I did not try with Centos 4.3 because I have heard that Centos 4.2 fully supports SATA disks. Please help, Thanks & regards, Ravi.

Kernel RPM

Hi All, I am having the source code of kernel with patched(2.6.9). After untar iin kernels directory . I tried to make the rpm of the kernel with changing the extraversion in Makefile. After that i run the command "make rpm" . I made the kernel rpm but ii made the distribution . But it gives the kernel panic . I made the initrd manually so it worked . please give me some idea how can i make the initrd image ... Thanks in Advance Juliet
