Although it's been discouraged on this list, we're using xfs and the unsupported CentOS kernels and haven't had any problems. We're anxiously waiting the 'new, improved' xfs drivers for CentOS :) :) Dave

sk98lin Gigabit Ethernet

Is anyone using sk98lin Gigabit Ethernet adapters under CentOS 4.x? The version of the driver that ships with CentOS 4.x kernels was too old to support the onboard NICs on some Intel server boards that we recently got, so we installed a newer driver using DKMS. However, we're having problems finding a stable driver to use: the first version that we tried (7.09) gave a kernel panic when I ran ethtool, and the latest two versions (8.30 and 8.31) periodically lose network connectivity and give kernel errors similar to the following: KERNEL: assertion (flags & MSG_PEEK) failed at net/ipv4/tcp.c (1293) UDP: bad checksum. From 10.0.0.1:53 to 10.0.0.2:58409 ulen 118 UDP: short packet: From 10.0.0.20:138 191/20 to 10.0.0.255:138 I saw that skge is recommended as a replacement for sk98lin, so I tried recompiling a skge module based on the patch at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=167768, but it failed to recognize my card. (I may have compiled it incorrectly.) Can anyone recommend a version of the sk98lin driver that works reliably? Alternatively, can anyone recommend a good Gigabit NIC that's recognized by a stock CentOS 4.x kernel? Thanks. Josh Kelley

Do i have to open port 631 for LAN printing

Hi, I have a Samsung printer(ML-2010) connect to my centos 4.2 machine by usb. I want to share this printer with 3 windowsXP mchines in my LAN. Although i have install driver for the printer on all machines, use samba to share the printer, from the windows machine i still have an error"access denied, can not connect to printer" or something similar. In Security Level, i have checked "trusted device: eth0, sit0" , is port 631 automatically open? How do i know that my problem is not caused by the blocked port? Hello, I've been reading the CentOS's FAQs, and saw this: How long will CentOS-4 updates be supported? We intend to support CentOS-4 updates until Feb 29, 2012. Would someone tell me what will happen after that?

I suppose this could be considered off-topic, but having finally finished setting up my new workstation I thought I'd brain-dump some things that I had to work out how to do. I had a devil of a time googling for some of this stuff, and found lots of forum threads etc. where some of the same questions I had went essentially un-answered, so I wanted to put these tidbits out in a place where they'd be archived and searchable. In no particular order ... I never did get my second onboard NIC working. The ASUS P5N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard is otherwise working fine, but the Linux drivers aren't able to differentiate the two identical nVidia NICs; I can only use one or the other. Hopefully that'll change soon, but I'm not holding my breath. Networking was broken briefly when I copied "LOCAL: ALL" (among other things) from my old workstation's configuration into /etc/hosts.allow, and "ALL: ALL" into /etc/hosts.deny, because "LOCAL" does not match "localhost.localdomain" which is the first name for 127.0.0.1 in /etc/hosts. Sendmail refused connections from the local machine (e.g., from fetchmail) until I realized what was going on. Be sure to list localhost.localdomain explicitly in hosts.allow. I wanted to start some ssh tunnels automatically when I log in. I tried putting the ssh commands directly into the Gnome "Startup Programs" (via Applications -> Preferences -> More Preferences -> Sessions) but that had the effect of causing logins to hang for 2+ minutes after putting up the splash screen. Eventually (see next item) I guessed that the session manager was waiting for the application to open a window, which of course ssh never will. The fix is to use an iconified terminal window as the "Startup Programs" entry, so that the session manager sees a window appear and knows that the application has started, and run ssh in the background from that terminal. E.g. xterm -iconic +hold -e ssh -N -f ... The icon appears briefly, then vanishes when ssh has backgrounded itself. If you need to typa a password and gnome-askpass fails to put up a dialog, omit the -iconic option. Also, it's important that the priority of this startup item be set to a larger number than that of metacity and gnome-panel; I chose "45". Speaking of the session manager ... I have some applications that run as root that need to open windows on the X server. This was failing with: Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server Xlib: No protocol specified On my old workstation I'd fixed this by linking root's .Xauthority file to the one in the logged-in user's home directory, but that didn't work on CentOS 4 because something (I still haven't figured out what) sets XAUTHORITY in root's environment to point to a randomly-generated file name, even if "su --preserve-environment" is used. The fix for this (which no one got right on any of some dozens of mailing lists/newsgroups where Google turns up references to this error) is for root to run: xauth merge /home/otheruser/.Xauthority However, even though the application can now open its window, it still issues a complaint: Warning: Tried to connect to session manager, Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported and host-based authentication failed To eliminate that message, root must also run: iceauth merge /home/otheruser/.ICEauthority Note that this must happen after the session manager has started up. I built and installed an RPM for an older calendar application (ical) which showed up in the Applications menu in three separate and inappropriate places. Turns out that it had placed its ical.desktop file in /etc/X11/applnk/ instead of /usr/share/applications/. That's about it; I had some other things I was going to mention, but on writing them down I decided they were too specific to my personal environment to be worth mentioning. There are still a few things I have questions about, but I'll leave those until I either get them solved or run out of other places to inquire.

centos roadmap?

Hi, I was looking for the roadmap for Centos 4.x. Is the release schedule somewhere on centos.org end if not, when can we expect the release of Centos 4.3? Somebody on irc in #centos told me it's a matter of weeks but it would be nice to get a more official confirmatiion so I can plan the rollout of Centos in my serverpark. regards, Geert

Nics are recognized as: eth0: Tigon3 [partno(BCM95704) rev 2002 PHY(5704)] (PCIX:100MHz:64-bit) 10/100/1000BaseT Ethernet 00:00:1a:19:f1:05 eth0: RXcsums[1] LinkChgREG[0] MIirq[0] ASF[0] Split[0] WireSpeed[1] TSOcap [1] eth1: Tigon3 [partno(BCM95704) rev 2002 PHY(5704)] (PCIX:100MHz:64-bit) 10/100/1000BaseT Ethernet 00:00:1a:19:f1:04 eth1: RXcsums[1] LinkChgREG[0] MIirq[0] ASF[0] Split[0] WireSpeed[1] TSOcap [1] Both machines are wired in the same way: eth0 is connected do 100mbit switch, eth1 to a gigabit switch. But: # mii-tool eth0: negotiated 100baseTx-FD, link ok eth1: negotiated 100baseTx-FD flow-control, link ok If I force eth1 to 1000 with ethtool, I get no link and then it autonegotiates itself back to 100. I can't even get them to talk at gigabit speed if I connect both machines together with crossover cable! I have looked at the following: Konica/Minolta 2430DL HP 2600N Can anyone tell me how well they work and are supported by cups as a network laser printing solution?
