LVM

How many people use LVM's in their production servers? Are they reliable for use in these sorts of systems? I am asking this because i was reading the LVM Howto about upgrading discs etc. Regards, Peter

System hangs silently

I have a total of 20 CentOS 4.1 systems running on fairly new hardware. About 6 of them are experiencing strange hangs without any indication -- nothing in /var/log/messages nor on the console -- sometime within 10-30 minutes after a reboot. The systems still responds to ping but you can't ssh to it. At the console, you could type "root" at the user prompt but it hangs immediately after hitting enter. Memory scan of all systems show no error. Any idea how to troubleshoot this problem. The system's not responsive to do any troubleshooting and nothing abnormal is in the log. We running htis kernel: kernel-smp-2.6.9-11.EL.i686.rpm. Thanks for any help.

grub.conf LABEL location

I have change my disk from hdc to hda. I need to change the LABEL information in grub.conf so hda is / and not hdc. Where is that. Thanks, jerry

Well this doesn't sound in any way healthy. You're going to want to crawl through your apache logs and see if anything looks out of place. Odd GET or POST requests, SQL statements that don't look right etc. You might also want to look in /var/tmp and /tmp as well as in your DOCUMENT_ROOT, and remember to do an ls -la to show hidden directories. There are a couple of things out there that create a directory called ... in /var/tmp etc. You'll also want to look at your web software to make sure you're running secure versions etc. and make sure you've got all things updated. = = = = = = Based on this discussion http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=991 357 I think you have been hacked. Process KOTFARE using 99% CPU

Dear Friends, I have process run in CENTOS 4.2 call kotfare that is using 99% CPU, it run with owner apache. I kill process KOTFARE and restart apache, after some hours this process return. I did find file with name *kotfare* and I din't find. Please, help me. Adriano

Hi, New kernels both up and smp via yum are installed not updated. The same happens for the kernel-devel package -- but the kernel-smp-devel package is updated... Cheers, MaZe.

HPLIP

First, has anyone successfully installed the HPLIP driver from HP in CentOS4? Second, does that driver really provide the toolbox which includes handy stuff like ink level monitoring? But what about system-config-printer? I'm not too keen on dropping back to manually setting up printers. Any advice is welcome.

4.2 Lockup on Fujitsu-Siemens Primergy Econel 200

Hello everybody, I'm looking for some insights on reproductible lockups with this server so please bear the long description that follows: Installed the 4.0 Centos than yum updated it so it results a 4.2 Centos fully updated. During the instalation and update there were no cold boots. That's important because if (updated Centos or not) you cold boot the server it stucks at the "configuring hardware ... storage" step. It does not matter the kernel version but if i choose the SMP kernels it freezes just a little later on "configuring hardware ... audio" step.It freezes at the same spot without kernel panicking. I altered the rc.sysinit file so that at the configuring hardware step it does not load any modules. It passes (forcefully) the configuring hardware step but it freezes at the next "Configuring kernel parameters" step. There are no errors in the log as the k(logd) is not started at that point. DHCP without network access

Hi, I've got a box with CentOS 4.2 x86_64 which had no DHCP access for a few hours, now I can't ping it (I'm pretty sure the box is still up). I expect the DHCP lease has timed out and the box has lost it's IP, I was expecting it to reacquire it once the DHCP came back up (configuration problem) - but no luck. Is this a known problem? Any solution/workaround? (for now or for the future...) Cheers, MaZe.
