Anyone use a Rio Cali Sport with CentOS 4.2?

My wife does and here's the problem. It automatically mounts the flash memory of the player. But it doesn't mount the SD card slot. I used Ubuntu 5.10 recently and it mounted both of them. Both as separate USB sticks. How do I get CentOS to do the same thing? Or can it not discern that two USB flash devices are plugged in? Preston

xfontsel larger font

I am running xfontsel. I dont seem to be able to select an helvetica font > 34 points. I am looking for something around 75 points. I dont seem to be able to find anything that large. Am I missing something? Jerry

starting a java application as a service

I have a single requirement to launch a java application on startup as a service. The application is shipped in a file called jes.jar. It requires three arguments: a dotted quad IP address, an initial service port, and a translated service port. I can get the application running as a console command. Can someone point me to a site that documents how to script a sys V init.d style script so that I can run this as a daemon process? I tried copying a script in the age old fashion but I seem to be missing something(s). Lastly, I vaguely recall that there is a way to capture the pid of a program started in the shell but I cannot find any reference to it. I seem to recall that the construct $! or $$ contained the value of the last program run. Can anyone here confirm this and/or provide an example. Thanks for the history lessons, Bryan. This suggests to me a GCC flag -fForgive2.9xUsers which would accept syntax and grammar from code valid to the 2.9x compiler (warn rather than barf). This isn't the compat compiler/lib suite (which is a separate option), but is a grace-rather-than-pedantics approach to compiler evolution. Hi CentOS4.2 - Is it possible to have an older version of gcc as well as the one that ships with this OS? I need to compile aspseek to run on this distro but it seems to only like older gcc's any ideas?

Backup Solutions based on Linux

I'm having particular issues running Veritas in my Windows environment. The agent just seems to baulk on some servers. I've looked into backup solutions running on Linux before but there doesn't seem to be much. Is anyone familiar with something that has Windows agents and yet managed by Linux? <<JAV>>

"flame" == "stoopidly pedantic"... NOT a discussion I want to get into again. It *is* 5 years after it was written, by folks no longer here, (actually 10 years) and it WORKED FLAWLESSLY when written. Code + compiler -> successful product. The compiler changed, it's current behavior is broken from my point of view! This compiler broken-ness drives a decision to NOT upgrade to the current (dysfunctional) compiler nor the OS it rode in on. Not necessarily... gcc 2.9x LOVES my code, and the program built under it runs like a champ. gcc 3.4 barfs on this same source code, so I see this as "Stoopidly Pedantic" on the part of the compiler-writers. Things that work and stop working because of a "better compiler" bring into question the definition of "better". If your program won't compile with a very stable GCC3, then you might want to fix the broken software rather than install an obsolete development environment, no? UPS tool ?

Hi all, I plan to upgrade some servers running good old RH7.2/7.3. Some of these machines' got UPS an I use nut to monitor them. I was very surprised to see that nut isn't included in RHEL 4.x (quite weird for an enterprise class distro). Is there any program I may use as a replacement for nut ? Or do I have to compile it by myself (I saw a nut SRPM was available for Fedora Core 4 so I guess it won't be hard to adapt it to CentOS 4.x). Thanks for your replies. Gilles.

X/gnome/KDE app that will scroll message across desktop

Is there a "built in" application for X/gnome/KDE that given a text string scroll it across the desktop? a command line program that did this would be exactly what I'm looking for. Is there anything like this? THanks, Jerry
