Security: should I be concerned?

Two things have been weighing on my mind regarding security issues. The first is that when I downloaded the CentOS 4.1 ISO images, I could not get the sums to match even using different downloads from different mirrors. I decided that that I was doing something wrong and decided to trust the images. So far no regrets. But I am concerned that I get it right the next time. I thought I had read everything carefully and I also had a small amount of experience with them in the past. Decided eventually maybe they just hadn't been updated (this was about a month or so ago, IIRC?). Can one post the command used to gen the numbers so I can use the correct parameters next time? TIA My second concern is with security update announcements. For all the announcers but one (IIRC) I get "Invalid signature" displayed (using Evolution). I would ask "Should I be concerned?", but the answer is self-evident in security circles. So instead, I'll ask if this is acceptable in the official CentOS and I can continue to rely on their stuff in their opinion. Again, TIA And, please, no comments on the irony inherent in this. We don't want to be un-subscribed, otherwise castigated or fan the flames of possible list moderation. I know "the powers that be" will appreciate our cooperation. Last TIA

Sendmail Config Question

Hi Default sendmail setup on a centos4.1 box - I need to send report type mails from this machine under cron. The SMTP relay i need to use requires user/pass so how can i send user/pass smtp auth from within the 'default' sendmail install? Anyone know what to change in sendmail.mc thanks

Missing In PATH

I'm a newb to linux so please be patient. Running CentOS 4. Using Bash. I'm not sure what happened, but now for some reason /sbin, /usr/sbin, and /usr/local/sbin are all missing from the path. I am su'd as root. I've tried several different methods to put this back including: PATH="/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/hom e/cholland/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/sbin" export PATH=$PATH:/sbin export PATH=$PATH:/usr/sbin export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/sbin All of these do add the directories to the path until I logout and log back in. Then they are gone again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Cody

CentOS 4.1 - Hang on boot

Hi Trying to install 4.1 on a chassis that has an Intel hardware RAID card in it - RedHat 7.3 was fine on this box. On boot the install runs through until i opt to skip the media test - After that it 'loading gdth driver' and the system hangs Any ideas as google is not my friend thanks

Apache + MYSQL HA Clustering

Postgreql 8

Thank you for the information. We are starting a new project on a dedicated development server. We therefore are looking at designing for v.8 from the outset, anticipating that this will be the common production version by the time the project is completed. I had previously built an early v8 release of Postgresql on CentOS 4, but that machine suffered a catastrophic disk failure and the work was lost. I was hoping, apparently vainly, that in the meantime a yummified rpm package had become available. Ah, well. Back to building the future, one bit at a time. Wherefore whitebox?

Well, I'm a recent convert from WBEL. My biggest concern with CentOS is that the community here seems to want to be more than a recompile of RHEL. But WBEL is floundering, what with Katrina and Rita, and there really being only 1 developer behind it, etc. I offer an automated shell script to switch from WBEL4 to CentOS4 (easy, it's hosted on my home DSL line!)
