CentOS-4.1 (Final) on Dell Inspiron 9300 Laptop

Hi, I have been using CenOS-4.1 quite sometime now on this laptop. Under CentOS I am having a problem during boots (soft or hard boots) that I never had with any other Linux distros including Fedora 4. I have to reboot the laptop twice as the first boot returns blank screen and hangs when it attempts to bring up login screen. I tested this a few times, there is no disk activity or any sign of OS activity.. In the end I switch the laptop off and start again.. It works fine perfectly in the second boot. Not sure what happens in the first boot (though all startup processes return OK till it gets hung) How can I diagnose this problem..? Is this a known problem..? Is there any workarounds..etc ? Radio software

Hi List, Does anyone know of any type of radio tuner software available for CentOS in either 32 or 64-bit versions? The card is an ATI X600. I've got the video driver from ATI installed, but they do not have any other user level software available. I think I remember reading something about some software being available for the BT chipset, but I'm a tad out of date on that. Also, while in my thoughts, who is the individual responsible for the screensaver(s) creation? I have a fantastic idea I'd love to pass to whoever does the coding. Thanks, -- Snowman

system-config-authentication

I can't find 'system-config-authentication' anywhere in the centos repos. I know its part of upstream... but we don't seem to have it. Am I missing something? -jim

Update or not?

After reading all the problems with the x86-64 update, I'm in a quandry as to update this machine or not. Nothing that I am aware of is broken, and at least everything I use works. This is NOT a production machine, but it does have some important software that needs to run twice daily, and I sure don't want to break things for that. If upgrade is not necessary, how do I go about turning off that red exclaimation point on the upper menu bar? Just tell it to ignore everything? -- Snowman

Kernel Audit Messages

Since updating to 4.2 my Opteron server has been flooded by messages like: audit(1129565701.837:155): user pid=4700 uid=0 auid=4294967295 msg='PAM session open: user=root exe="/usr/sbin/crond" (hostname=?, addr=?, terminal=cron result=Success)' to both /var/log/messages and the kernel ring buffer. Looks like they are being generated by cron jobs being run on the server. Does anyone know how to turn these messages off or to redirect them? Kirk

I use OpenNMS and this is how I install it. So far it's worked every time (6 installs). Make sure you open up your IPTables as needed. Centos 4.1 Boot Problem on ML570 with Compag 5300 Storage Array Raid Controller

Hello All, Hardware: HP ML570 2G Ram Dual 2.8G procs Compaq 5300 Smart Array Controller Software: Centos 4.1 I yum-med a server last week and rebooted it. When it came up, it stopped. Looking at the console, I got: ---snip Setting Hostname: OK Checking root filesystem: /dev/cciss/c0d0p10 is mounted, e2fsck cannot continue, aborting failed *** an error occurred during the file system check *** Dropping you to a shell; The system will reboot *** when you leave the shell Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) ---snip So I did what any good sysadmin would do- I grabbed the boot disk and rebooted the box in rescue mode and ran e2fsck on the /root partition. No errors came up and rebooting the box resulted in the same error! So I dug a little, and found that putting some comments in /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit would circumvent *the error* and allow the box to boot.
