Cookbook receipe for SCSI tape install requested.

I need to install an HP Surestore dlt on a Centos 4 machine and I am at a loss as to how to proceed. Can someone either provide or point me to an online reference on how to proceed to add and configure a SCSI adapter and tape drive. I have read, but not really understood, the man page entry for st. Does kudzu handle this? /var/log/lastlog on x86_64

Hi list, this problem is already known and I'm sorry to bother if an acceptable workaround was already debated on the list. I was getting trouble with a 'grep something /var/log*' which caused the "Memory exhausted" message. With some deeper search I found the lastlog file in /var/log/ to be 1.2T sized. This seems to come from the nfsnobody's uid to be 4294967294 on x86_64 system (and -1 on i386) and the pre-allocation space for every uid (so from 0 to ...4294967294...hum..) from lastlog. Since I do not use NFS at all, can I just erase the nfsnobody from /etc/passwd and start with a blank lastlog file (this looks like a great way to nuke my system)? Or do I need to explicitly exclude this file from all my search? How do you -x86_64 users- deal with this? Hi we bought an astaro firewall and are quite happy with it, now we need to buy a commercially supported LVS (linux virtual server) appliance. Does anyone have any good experience using any commercial LVS devices with web based GUI. --

CentOS 3 -> logins

Hi, Since I upgraded CentOS from 3 to 4, I get those enties in logwatch. It seems to be caused by cron, opening a session everytime it executes a task. Yum

This may be considered a newbie question, and for me, yum is a new tool. I have discovered via yum, I am *supposed* to have libf2c (386) and libf2c (x86-64) installed. Searching the two libs, I find I only have the 32-bit version installed, and I need both. Should I use yum to remove the pkgs, and then reinstall, or should I use rpm to do the installs? Again, I'm from the BSD camp, so this is all new to me. Also, are the two libs in question on the distro CD's or do I need to go out and find them, or let yum find them for me and install? Postfix+sasl Outlook problem.

I have mail server on CentOS 4.1. Sasl authorization for SMTP is enabled. Thunderbird sends mail, but Outlook get an error 554, Relay access denied, error number 0x800CCC79 Outlook has a login and password for SMTP enabled. It will reduce bandwidth, not all, maybe not much, but unestablished TCP connections take less bandwidth than established, with most of the bandwidth being used by the protocol data on top of the established session (even if its just a reject). Nelson

sending key strokes to applications

All, Is there a way to send key strokes to applications under X? I wish to send F11 to mozilla/firefox to put it in full screen mode. Not sure why there is not a command line parameter to do it. Just some utility that could be run that sends a keystroke to an application. THanks Jerry

snmp values for interface traffic - Centos 3.5/x86_64

Is there a problem with the values returned from snmp for ethx interface traffic on x86_64? I have cacti graphing several servers that should peak around 200k/s and it sometimes pegs at 100M for periods of time when in fact the interfaces are not busy at all. I did a 'yum update' and rebooted, and things cleared up for a while, but now at least one is going crazy again, so perhaps the reboot just helped until something triggered the condition again. Stopping/starting snmpd doesn't help and the values from ifconfig look sane. I haven't seen anything like it on x86 servers doing otherwise similar things, just the x86_64's. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com
