You need to install mysql-server. Sounds like mysql is installed which is the client but not the server. Apparently mysqld does not exist on the system. Not sure why this is. Has anyone else run into this issue? Look in /etc/init.d and see if mysqld exists. If it does, try to start it with /etc/init.d/mysqld start Until mysqld is started, mysql will not be able to talk to it. I just installed CentOS 3.5. Included in the install was mysql. When trying to start it using: service mysqld start. The system responds with mysqld not recpognized as a service. When trying to use /usr/bin/mysql I receive this error: ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2). A search of the system does not reveal mysql.sock. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks for any assistance. Ed

Is there an equivalent command or application to "sockstat" as in the BSD camp under CentOS? How about systat ? Thanks... -- Snowman

Incompatible Libraries

Fellow users, I'm running into some rather odd behavior trying to compile some software, and would like to know if there is maybe a fix or if I should revert back to a 32-bit version of Centos. I'm trying to compile NCAR Graphics, as well as some other weather related software on this machine which is running the Centos 4.1 x86-64 version. It's a dual Xeon processor. I've installed all the required rpms, i.e., xdevel, xaw, etc. The problem I'm seeing is during linking of the various packages, where I get messages of "skipping incompatible /usr/X11R6/lib/libXaw.so when searching for -lXaw". I see similar other messages when trying to link to -L X11, and so forth and so on. I've got the correct paths set in the makefiles, but not sure I understand why the libs are being shown as incompatible. If any of you have built ncarg on the x86-64 OS, I'd sure like to hear from you, and what you did to effect the compile. Thanks.. Sam -- Snowman

I found this article about Microsoft SFU being built into the new Windows 2003 Server R2 very interesting. http://news.com.com/Microsoft+makes+Unix+changes/2100-1016_3-5845790.html?t… What does this signify? Is Windows ready to really co-exist with Unix / Linux ... or are they going to try and provide similar functionality because they recognize it is better technology moving forward?

Accents in filenames on vfat filesystem

Hello. I am trying to create a text file that contains an accent like 'é' in it's filename on a vfat filesystem. This generates an error like the following: "testé.txt" E212: Can't open file for writing I have made a 'modprobe nls_cp850' and 'modprobe nls_iso8859-1' to load those needed modules. Then I mounted my FAT32 partition like this: mount -t vfat -o iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 /dev/hdb1 /samba_backups The mount succeeded but I still cannot create or copy a file that has an accent in it's filename. Of course I can create without any problem a file without any accent once the filesystem mounted the same way. It seems that other people on other systems are having no problems. Does somebody knows what happens and what I am doing wrong, and that would have any suggestion ? Thank you. Daniel

CentOS bootstrapper for chroot(2) environment

Hi, just some script built along: Unattended install & run CentOS-4.1 just using chroot(1). Mostly a surprise for me it was so easy to reach that goal. It requires rpm(1) based host OS and it was tested only on Fedora Core 4. I needed it to do only a bit customized CentOS kernel package rebuild. Regards, Lace

tar question

Basic tar question: I have created a ar file with tar -prvf /tmp/ib_backup.tar /opt/interbase/data/* The file has been copied to another box and I want to untar the file into /opt/interbase/data/ I am not sure about the syntax; how to specify where I want the data to be placed.
