file system defragmentation

I've read in many places that file systems on Linux do not suffer the same fragmentation problems of Windows systems. No one has provided a clear explanation as to why fragmentation is not an issue for file systems such as ext2/3, reiserfs, xfs, etc. Just curious.

Dual Boot problem

Hi all Have tried to dual boot CentOS with SUSE 9.3. Installed SUSE first then CentOS 4 and now cant boot into SUSE any ideas how I can get grub to pick up SUSE..I thought I had configured grub correctly at install. Regards. Newton

In reality, it is because I am anal. I changed to CentOS from Gentoo, and with Gentoo, there was no /media directory. I had drives mounted to /media/music , /media/television, and so on. So, when I changed to CentOS, by habit I wanted the same structure. Now when connecting to my samba share that connects to the /media directory, I get two other directories; floppy and lost+found. I guess it isn't a big deal, but it definitely bothers me. There has to be a reason that that dir and fstab line are being added. Ah, I thought you meant that you were having mounts take place when the floppy disc was present in the drive. Why do you care if there is an empty directory? OT: CentOS server with 2 GbE links to 2 GbE switches

Hi all, I am trying to come up with an architecture that has some redundancy. The idea is to hook up the two GbE LAN interfaces of a CentOS server to two Gigabit Ethernet switches. In case one switch goes down, there is a redundant path (the server is redundant too). Here is the idea: ----------- | GbE | PCs ------------| switch |------------ | | ----------- | | ----------------- ----------------- ---| Workgoup Switch | | CentOS/Asterisk | | ----------------- ----------------- | | ----------- | VoIP ------------| GbE |------------ Phones | switch | ----------- How would I acomplish this? Can I use IP addresses from one IP network (say 10.0.0.0/24) to assign to the 2 LAN ports on the CentOS server and a port on each of the GbE switches and then use something like OSPF on the switches and the CentOS box to do the routing? screen shifting

Hello List, I was wondering if there is a way to shift the screens in linux. I got a kvn yesterday, and have a problem when switching from computers, where the screen is slightly shifted on one of them. I have to go into the monitor configuration screen and move the screen to the right to center it on one of the computers. Then when moving back to the other computer, that screen isn't centered and have to back to the left so its centered. Is there a way to adjust this in xorg.conf so that when I switch between the computers, I don't have to switch the computers? I am running CentOS 4.1. Thanks, Dan

Ok, it seems I am a little off on my problem description. I can delete /media/floppy but on system restart, that directory is automagically created. Gfs and storage

Hi Guys, I have two mail servers and I want them to use gfs to share some storage device.. I don't want to buy a storage device but I have a spare server that maybe could be used. Anybody here use gfs without a proper san? Say just somehow using a server running linux? Or anybody have any thoughts? Thanks, Wayne

portsentry and proftpd RPMs available

Just dropping a note, I've built CentOS4 friendly RPMs (as well as RHEL4 and FC4) of two of my favourite tools, PortSentry and ProFTPd: ftp://ftp.pbone.net/mirror/ftp.falsehope.net/home/tengel/portsentry/CentOS4/ ftp://ftp.pbone.net/mirror/ftp.falsehope.net/home/tengel/proftpd/CentOS4/ PortSentry is built using the last known (RedHat 9 based) SPEC/patches from FreshRPMS, updated to apply with the latest known version 1.2. I have noticed no problems in it's operation on a production server, it's detecting portscans and dropping IPs as expected. ProFTPd has a backport of a patch applied that makes it work with the default MySQL 'old_passwords=1' setting found in RHEL4/CentOS4 default installs (proftpd bug #2644). If you don't want ProFTPd MySQL support in CentOS4, simply rebuild the SRPM without any commandline options. php-memcache module and Centos 3

Hi all, I need to compile the php-memcache PECL module but it needs a php 4.3.3 version. RHEL 3/Centos 3 provides only a php 4.3.2 but the symbol ' php_stream_pclose' is unknown. The compilation fail with : ext/memcache/memcache.o(.text+0x7ab):/home/alain/rpm/BUILD/php-4.3.2/ext/memcache/memcache.c:386: undefined reference to `php_stream_pclose' Then I wonder if a guru on this list managed to create a patch easily integrated in the php.src.rpm to permit the usage of php-memcache on Centos3 -- Alain

impress viewer for openoffice

Hi, I am attempting to find an openoffice powerpower point viewer. I found imposter but when I run my file it says "Cannot find zip signature". I though I would zip it up an try it again but that did not work either. Also I dont think there is a way from the command line to go fullscreen? not sure. Anyone know of a good power point viewer for centos? or a way to make impress startup and go into slideshow mode? Either is fine... Jerry
