KDE screensaver on Centos 4.1

The KDE screen savers will only blank out the screen though most of them test ok when you hit the test button in the Control Center. The Gnome screen savers work ok. My system has a Radeon 9200SE video card and I have a ViewSonic A70f monitor. Does anyone have a fix for this?

Help.I can't start with my new kernel.

Hello!Eveyone! I'm a new user to CentOS. I builded a new kernel(2.6.12) yesteray with these command: #make defconfig #make menuconfig #make #make modules #make modules_install #make install #reboot ... But,when I choose the new kernel,it stop with "kernel panic". When building the kernel,I choose ext3 with "y".My hard disk is IDE,so I choose the IDE support. I don't know what's wrong. I met the same problem on FC4.But,I can build a new kernel on Debian successfully,using these commands. CentOS 4.1 yum update just hangs

Kickstart BOOT kernel

Could someone tell me how the kernel used for kickstart (called the BOOT kernel in RH 9 days) is created? How does one generate this kernel using rpmbuild of the src rpm? I'm just trying to undertstand the differences. Thanks for any help.

OT: BIOS upgrades and booting without a floppy drive

I've got a machine running CentOS 3.5 with an Intel D865GBF motherboard and I've been having an occasional "event" where disk-intensive activity (such as running "yum check-update" or starting up OpenOffice) causes the load average to spike and X11 to become unresponsive (as in, the pointer won't even track the mouse) for a few seconds. The machine always recovers and returns to normal, but it's getting a bit annoying. I saw one thread in which the suggested solution for a vaguely similar problem was to switch from the SMP kernel with hyperthreading to the UP kernel, but that hasn't made much difference. Then I saw Dave G's recent thread in which a more severe yum-related lockup was solved with a BIOS upgrade. I see there's a D865GBF BIOS upgrade on the Intel site, dating from May. Problem is it comes only as either a Windows installer, or a bootable floppy -- and not only does this machine not have a floppy drive, but the case configuration is such that the DVD-ROM drive blocks access to the floppy connector on the motherboard, so I'm looking at minor surgery just to stick one in temporarily. Is there any clever way around this? Some way to make a bootable CD from the floppy image, for example? Or must I grit my teeth and bring out the screwdrivers?

Need a little kick start to compile appletalk module

RHEL 4 (and thus CentOS 4) do not have appletalk module included. CentOSPlus rather thoughtfully has the 'unsupported' version which would have the appletalk module but I have been unable to get the old megaraid driver to run compiled from the kernel-devel for these 'unsupported' kernels. Thus I would love to simply compile the appletalk module myself from the standard kernel-devel for the standard i686/i686smp kernels as I have to do for the old megaraid driver. Thus it would appear, that I would need the kernel source for this. How would I 'isolate' the appletalk kernel stuff? Would I install the kernel-sourcecode rpm - like... <http://centos.cs.ucr.edu/centos/4.1/os/i386/CentOS/RPMS/kernel- sourcecode-2.6.9-11.EL.noarch.rpm> and hunt down the appletalk directory and compile the module separately pretty much as I do with the older megaraid code? Is it reasonable to hope that the necessary code for the appletalk kernel module would be contained in one subdirectory? Is there an easier way that I am missing? Craig
