Business software for Linux

I am hoping to find a inventory management program suitable for something like a bookstore or other 1-5 person smb. The software would need to be able to accept inputs from wireless handheld scanning devices for entry into the system. It must also work with their windows based PoS computer. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. less strange behavior

Have encountered a (rather minor but puzzling and annoying) problem with "less" that I can reproduce on multiple CentOS4 boxes. Only seems to be a problem for a root login on a VC. Here's the scenario: 1) Login as root on a VC. 2) Type "less /etc/printcap" or any other text file. 3) less hangs until Ctrl-C is typed, then displays the file. If a gzipped file is tried, after the Ctrl-C it warns that the file is binary rather than unzipping and displaying as might be expected. Using "zless <filename>.gz" works OK. Seems to be something to do with lesspipe.sh behavior set up in /etc/profile.d/less.sh... 4) Type "unset LESSOPEN" 5) Now less works with text files without hanging, but without the smart wrapper behavior. (zless still works with .gz files.) Logging in as a user on a VC there is no problem, and doing "su -" on the VC there is no problem, working in a konsole as a user or root, or doing ssh to another machine as root, no problems - less works as expected, except with a root login on a VC. Can't find anything in Bugzilla and don't recall encountering this on RH-any-version, FC1/2/3, or WBEL3. A) Can anyone else confirm this? Could be something strange about my root .??* files that have been propagated across machines, but I can't find any problem. B) Does this happen on RHEL4? C) If so, could somebody with a RHEL entitlement bugzilla it? If not, this could be a CentOS4-specific bug. Thanks, Phil

rpmbuild question.

I am attempting to build from a src.rpm (knowing very little about rpm at all) and the spec file notes that the architecture should be set on the command line: > # platform defines - set one below or define the build_xxx on the command line Now. My question is this, how does one do this using rpmbuild? The syntax rpmbuild --target centos4 package.src.rpm seemingly has no effect. bash file direct execution

Hi all. I have a little strange problem. I created a file called 'test.sh' in the root directory containing: #!/bin/sh echo test When I execute it with '/test.sh' there is no output. When I source it by executing it with '. /test.sh' the output comes ok. When I move it to '/root' and execute it with '/root/test.sh' then it works perfectly. When I move it to '/home' and execute it with '/home/test.sh' there is no output. Could someone tell me what I shoud do to make the script run without sourcing it with '.' ? This problem happens only on one CentOS 4 box I have, on the others it works perfectly. What am I doing wrong ? The permissions are 755 on the file itself, and I execute them logged as root. Opteron in 32-bit mode

I'm spec-ing a development server for some Haskell hackers. In particular, they need to be able to build and run the Glasgow Haskell Compiler (ghc), the x86_64 port of which isn't quite there yet. My current thought is to get an Opteron-based system, but load it (initially, at least) with the 32-bit i386 version of CentOS. That buys me near-term ghc compatibility. In the future, should ghc become 64-bit clean, I'll be able to upgrade to a full 64-bit OS. The alternative is to build the server around high-end ia32 chips and leave the Opteron for another day. Does anyone have experience running a 32-bit-only OS on Opterons? Are there any gotchas? -- Paul Heinlein <> heinlein(a)madboa.com <> www.madboa.com

KDE as default, and looking up CentOS on the web.

This should be simple, but I can't find it on the web: How do I make KDE my default environment? Every time I reboot it goes back to Gnome unless I specifically change the environment before logging in. And while I'm at it, why is it I never find any information about CentOS on the net? I look up "CentOS KDE default" or something like that, and I get more about things like Mandrake or Fedora or any other distro than I do about CentOS. I know that CentOS is supposed to be on the same level as Fedora Core 3 and Red Hat Enterprise 8 or 9... but still, why is it that no one even seems to mention CentOS? It's like this big but invisible community of users. Dave

Can't find repository for centosplus

While trying to get my SD card reader to work with CentOS, it was recommended to me that I update to the centosplus kernel. I attempted to do so using yum, as was recommended, but I encountered the following error: [root@localhost ~]# yum --enablerepo=centosplus update kernel Repository update already added, not adding again Error getting repository data for centosplus, repository not found So I checked the internet for answers, and it seemed that my /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo file might not point to the right place. However, when I compared my centosplus entry in /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo to examples on the net, it seemed to be correct: #additional packages that extend functionality of existing packages [centosplus] name=CentOS-$releasever - Plus baseurl=http://mirror.centos.org/centos/$releasever/centosplus/$basearch/ gpgcheck=1 enabled=0 Why can I not access the repository and install centosplus? patching postfix with VDA

hi guys can anyone give me info how to patch postfix with VDA? im using centos 4 with postfix-2.1.5-4.2. Running another gnome or kde on virtual console

Hi, I'm still new in linux world and CentOS is my 2nd linux desktop I ever used ( have used it for month now, before using Ubuntu for 2 days ), so please gave me a little favor on it :) What I need to do is to have my virtual console that can also run gnome or kde, so I can have different windows on different virtual console. After googling, I found the qingy that just fit for my need. I try to install qingy ( http://qingy.sourceforge.net ) on my desktop by following the manual at qingy site with no luck :( after googling for the more installations howto, I found that most of it is for gentoo linux.. does anybody here with success story of it want to share info on installing it? I have install directfb as required by qingy but when I run fbset, I got error about /dev/fb0 can't opening.. if I follow the manual on qingy site, it's should list the display mode.. anybody can brief me what the error is all about and how I could create the /dev/fb0 file? When I go to virtual console ( alt+ctrl+f2 ), I got messages : Warning : cannot get console framebuffer resolutions! Unrecoverable error: reverting to text mode! Anyone have any ideal what that means? I have set : video=vesafb:ywrap mtrr vga=0x317 at grub configurations after the kernel statement, anyone have any suggestions? Anyone please shed me some light on this, and thanks in advances, If anyone can guide me on howto to have X running on virtual-console, I really appreciate it and sorry for my bad english Regards. ijez
