Recommended hardware for a firewall/router?

Not really a CentOS specific question, but I hope it's ok... I've decided to buy a server to use as a firewall/router instead of the usual Cisco box, simply because I've come to love Firewall Builder and would like to put all my subnets into one firewall. There will be four gigabit interfaces in the box, one of which will be the internet connection (so this one interface will use max. 10 mbit). Question is if any "normal" hardware will be able to handle this if most of the interfaces gets saturated? What chipset / motherboard should I go for? On a sidenote, I've noticed from the subject on some of the most recent messages that Bryans beeing hassled. I dunno what it's really about since I haven't read the messages, but I'd like to say that I consider Bryan to be a valuable asset to this list. Regards, Harald

probes on udp port 500

Last couple of days some of my hosts were probed for UDP port 500 (IKE daemon, used by IPSec for key exchange) from dialup IPs. Don't remember seeing similar probes before. Some new vaulnerability that script kiddies (and pro crackers) are trying out, or is this some old stuff? I do remember there were some security problems with racoon in the past (that were fixed in current CentOS ipsec-tools packages), but don't remember reading anywhere there were any automated tools to exploit it floating around. Modify rescue mode boot?

Hi, I have been able to boot with pxe and load linux rescue, it loads loader and ask me lang, keyboard,load base from nfs, etc... then it ask me about mount chroot or skip, I just choose skip to go to shell. What I want is boot in rescue mode and get a shell directly without having to enter lang, keyboard, nfs ip and dir, skip, etc... once booted on shell I want it automatically run a script mounted via nfs /mnt/source/myscript p.e. any idea on how to avoid all those questions from rescue mode?? Thanks.

remove RPMs with cyclic dependancies.

Okay, I tried installing OpenOffice beta, and I think I messed it up, so I wanted to uninstall it. I thought wilcards worked, so I tried: [root@localhost program]# rpm -e openoffice* error: package openoffice* is not installed Okay, so I couldn't figure out how to remove a bunch of RPM packages at once, so I did this: [root@localhost program]# rpm -qa | grep openoffice And proceeded the labourous task of removing all of the RPMs listed one by one. But then I got down to some files that would say: rpm -e openofficeorg-core01-1.9.122-1.i586 error: Failed dependencies: openofficeorg-core01 is needed by (installed) openofficeorg-core08-1.9.122-1.i586 So then I'd remove the dependancy, and guess what?: rpm -e openofficeorg-core08-1.9.122-1.i586 error: Failed dependencies: openofficeorg-core01 is needed by (installed) openofficeorg-core01-1.9.122-1.i586 The two packages are dependant on each other so I can't remove either. *sigh* So, how do I remove them? And now onto the palm pilot with Kpilot

I've looked up the Kpilot manual, and I think I have an okay idea of what's going on with it. I'm trying to get it's detection feature to find my Palm Pilot. CentOS does seem to be able to recognize it, because if I run lsusb when running a hot sync, I get the following: [root@localhost dev]# lsusb Bus 001 Device 010: ID 0830:0060 Palm, Inc. Palm Tungsten T / Zire 71 That's encouraging. My Palm Pilot is actually a Tungsten E, not a T, but I'm not sure that's a level of detail that matters at this point. The Kpilot documentation suggest that I look for the palm pilot at /dev/ttyUSB0. That didn't work, but I noticed in my /dev/ directory that there was also a ttyUSB1. That didn't work either. But then I noticed that both were only apparent when I was hot syncing my Palm, so they must be connected to it. Any ideas, then, as to why Kpilot is not acknowledging them as a Palm device the way that lsusb does? Dave

Postfix 2.2.x RPM ETA

Guys I'm desperately looking for a postfix 2.2.x SRPM. I currently use 2.1.5.. I've found these, http://ftp.wl0.org/yum/postfix/2.2/rhel4/SRPMS.postfix/ Has anyone tried them, or can anyone recommend a proper SRPM for me for Centos 4.1? Their is no 3.5 server iso posted yet, and their is no md5sum listed for the 3.4 server iso that is posted. Is this message from YUM a bad thing?

I was doing a YUM update, and it found about 70 packages to download and install. While installing, this message popped up a couple of times: /sbin/ldconfig: File /usr/lib/libk3bdevice.so.2.0.0.#prelink#.X8kEMh is empty, not checked. And then after about three or four times of saying that, the YUM update stopped without finishing. So I started it again, and it picked up where it left off, so I figured it was no big deal. Then, about mid way through, it did it again. I went through this process a couple more times, and eventually it updated all the packages. But what does it mean, and is it significant? Should I care? hda dma seek errors

I am getting occasional seek error on my boot drive. The messages are as follows: pshda: dma_intr: status = 0x51 { Drive ReadySeekComplete Error } hda: dma_intr: error= 0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC } ide: failed opcode was: unknown Everything seems to be working fine but these errors do have me concerned. The last time they occurred I was created a fairly large cpio backup file in the '/tmp' directory. The drive has been checked via fsck, and any errors found were reported to be corrected. Should I take some kind of action on this, or just ignore the errors?
