My CentOS4 box here has ext2online included; I have not had a chance to try it out, so I can't comment on how well it works. However, what I have read is that the LVM2 metadata format is more robust and removes many of the limitations of LVM1. In trying to check on this, I looked for specific information on how this was the case, but have not been able to at this point. The ext2/3 filesystem wasn't designed for resizing online, so it's quite nice one can do it at all; but it appears the LVM2 approach is to rely on the e2fsprogs to do the work, so, taking you question literally, no, there is no LVM2 tool to resize; you would do a two-step, resizing the logical volume then resizing the filesystem with e2fsprogs. But, having never had opportunity to do this, I have no direct experience with it. --- So, has anyone found an equivalent (even multiple commands that I could put in a script) for the e2fsadm utility to extend a logical volume? Anyone who has experience with ext2online? -- Collins Head teachers of the world unite: you have nothing to lose but the Start button.

Fighting some install issues with a new box

Folks- I have had a machine dropped in my lap that I am trying to get CentOS 4.1 to run on as a first pass (the hope is for it to eventually run Rocks -- http://www.rocksclusters.org , which uses CentOS 4.x as its underlying OS). The machine has 2 Opteron 250DP (2.4GHz) with 4 GB of RAM. It is using a Tyan Thunder K8WE (S2895A2NRF) motherboard with an nVidia nForce chipset -- http://www.tyan.com/products/html/thunderk8we.html. It is configured to boot from an SATA drive (80GB) and then use 3Ware 8506-8 card with 8x250GB SATA drives in a big raid 5 as a data store. So, CentOS appears to recognize the nics and find the boot drive well enough to go through a complete install. Now this is where things get "interesting" .. the install process hung for a very long period of time during the "installing grub" phase (this was a cd install, so no post or anything, done off-line). It finally rebooted, but it just hangs at the "GRUB Loading stage2..." If I boot the machine using the 4.1 install cd in rescue mode, I can see the filesystem (the OS is installed). /etc/grub.conf doesn't look unreasonable. One oddball thing is that I cannot see the 3ware card at all (doesn't show up in lspci output). Any thoughts? Anyone set up a similar beastie? Thanks. Sean

Software to monitor security logs and email ISPs?

I know they have software that does this. I'm just not sure which one it is. Basically here's the scoop. I'm on a cable modem connection with Comcast. I have a firewall router and I run a firewall on CentOS as well. All the same, other computers (probably zombies or hackers) are attempting brute force attacks on a couple of ports on my computer. I've just sat and watched them for some time. Not thinking that much of it. But I'd like to actually do something about it and inform the ISPs of said computers that that computer is compromised or being used by a hacker. I know there is software out there that will monitor your logs, reverse trace the IP address, and contact the ISP saying that at X time on X day X IP address tried to brute force hack my machine. I guess it's one of those things where I'm sick of seeing it come up in my security log, so I'd like to start sending email to the ISPs to tell them to do their job and enforce their rules for all the Windoze users out there. But I don't want to take the time to do it manually. Any suggestions? Preston

Centos Mail

I have a problem finding the log from centos. I have installed qmail and i receive a lot of infected mails and i can't stop them because i don't know the ip from where they came. I know that in log files it is kept that ip but i havent't find it. In /var/log/ maillog it is a list but it does not have the ip of the mails. Can anyone help me? Not booting without keyboad.

Hi, I'm running CentOS 3 on a Dell celeron 500/256 MB. It won't boot without a keyboard and that is a problem for me. I know it is not a perfect setup, but I'd like to have it boot w/o a keyboard. The Bios doesn't seem to care too much about the fact that no keyboard is plugged in, as it loads Grub and starts booting the kernel.
