OT: P4 Vs Xeon for Linux

I have just had delivered a new HP Proliant server and it is based on an Intel Xeon 2.8GHz processor. On site already we have an Acer Altos G310 with a P4 2.8GHz processor. The new HP server was destined for another site with about 30 persons to service some simple file and print sharing and to manage their email (postfix + MailScanner). The Acer is hosting our Intranet, file and print sharing and soon to have our email + bacula backup services for potentially 250 users. Performance wise, would it be worth the small effort to move the Intranet etc. onto the Xeon-based server and ship the P4 to the other site or will the potential performance gains not be significant? Any insight appreciated. Thanks

ACLs iin Centos 4

Hi There, It seems the default installer with Centos 4, enables DACs and the extra ACLs which DUMP cannot handle.... so I get errors like "DUMP: ACLs in inode #nnnn won't be dumped" since DUMP and RESTORE is integral to my back policy for some 30+ machines I would like to know if its possible to turn off the extra ACLs in the file system as I really don't need them... Can tune2fs do this for me or do I have to re-build the filesystems with some option that I currently don't know... P.

YUM - Did directories change on the mirrors?

I didn't see this in the mail archives, maybe I missed it. I'm running CentOS 3. It looks like the $releasever directory has been dropped from mirrors.centos.org. This just happened in the last week (I run a daily cron to check for updates) My yum.conf (for CentOS 3) has url's defined like: baseurl=http://mirror.centos.org/centos-3/$releasever/addons/$basearch/ But when I run yum I get errors: Server: CentOS-3 - Addons retrygrab() failed for: http://mirror.centos.org/centos-3/3/addons/i386/headers/header.info Executing failover method failover: out of servers to try Error getting file http://mirror.centos.org/centos-3/3/addons/i386/headers/header.info Using my browser I see that this URL doesn't exist: http://mirror.centos.org/centos-3/3/addons/i386/headers/header.info But this does (notice the 3/ is missing): http://mirror.centos.org/centos-3/addons/i386/headers/header.info Is this a permament change or a temporary one due to server updates? text based terminal program in CentOS 4

Greetings It has been a long time and I cannot recall the name of any text based terminal program(s) for a bash shell. I need to look through serial port 1 on a remote server running CentOS 4. A blanket... rpm -qa | grep term did not help... can you folks please let me know what you use or recommend please? Regards, - rh

This Proliant (ml330 G3) has an HP CSB-6 (LSI/Megaraid) disk controller that isn't recognised by the installer. A quick search on Google reveals drivers from RH7 - AS2.1 but nothing for 3 or 4 unless anyone knows different!? If not I'll just have to disable it and install a supported RAID card. Anyone!? Nigel

graphical shutdown

Hi everyone, I know that Linux "does reboot only for adding new hardware" but here at home I need to do it more often. The shutdown phase is only textual or it can be like on bootup where with "esc" I can see (if i want) the messages ? I can never say if it's me or the "graphical" thing is abandoned ...
