Create Distro

Is there a novice level way to produce a distro/copy/whatever of an installation so that I can duplicate it on a new box? Is there a hard drive copy application that can copy linux drives? Beth

In regard of the e-mail sent on Jul/16/04 about the 3Ware 9500S. Has anyone experienced/solved this issue ?? I'm having a similar problem, I already have the system installed on a separate disk, now I want to make the filesystem on the RAID partition (using 3Ware 9500S-8). First I had the problem that the card will keep resetting after continous timeouts whenever I tried loading the module (compiled from source, in up-mode, driver v.9.2 from 3Ware's website). The solution to this was to disable APIC on the motherboard (or boot linux without APIC support). So, now the module loads ok (I've tried SMP and ENT versions, I'm using kernel 2.4.21-15.0.4-ELsmp). But the timeout and reset problem start happening again when I try to create the filesystem on the RAID partition. I can cancel the mkfs operation, but then I get a kernel panic if I try to unload the module (rmmod 3w-9xxx), just like the problem that the previous poster had. Any ideas or input would be appreciated. David

Using yum to do downgrades

This is a yum question but relates to some work I am doing with CentOS and other recent discussions on this list so I though I would post here first. Basically I am attempting a Red Hat 7.2 -> CentOS-2 upgrade. So far it has worked like a charm. The problem is though that yum (no doubt by design) will not downgrade packages to the CentOS versions. The problem is that some old RPMs have 72 in the release (for Red Hat 7.2) and the newer package as 21 in the release (For Enterprise Linux 2.1). Some others are updates to 7.2 which increased the version number where as 2.1 got a backported fix and increased release number. Is there a way to make yum always select a particular Vendor or Distribution? What about using yum to do an explicit downgrade "yum install mypackage-version-oldrelease"? Also, this is an rpm question, does anyone know if I can do "rpm --erase redhat-logos" and "rpm -i centos-logos" at the same time? If I put an obsoletes: tag into centos-logos will yum do that for me? Is that a good idea? At the moment I have a bash script which trys to work out the downgrade rpm commands but I can not check dependencies. Any other suggestions, tips or tricks would be appreciated. XF86Setup

Hello. I am looking for the famous XF86Setup command used on RedHat 7.1 (for XFree86) but I didn't find it on CentOS 3.1. Did it change into something else ? Else how can I configure my monitor, mouse, video card settings ? Same questions for starting the hardware material configurator. How can I force it to run ? I know that it runs automatically at boot when we change a card or device, but how to force starting this program manually ? Thanks, Daniel

up2date-4.2-33-1.centos.3.1

After installing from CD I ran up2date and it looks like I got everything updated. For some reason the up2date icon stays red and tells me that I have up2date-4.2-33-1.centos.3.1 installed but latest version is up2date-4.5.1.centos.3.1 which is the old version of up2date. All the files it wants me to up2date to are the old files. Is this normal for Centos and will it correct itself when new updates come out? thanks all. _______________________________ Do you Yahoo!? RHN-like system for CentOS?

Team, Is anyone aware of a Red Hat Network alike system of server package update status that could be adapted for CentOS3? I'm not interested in the complete management aspect (channels, scheduling remote updates, etc) but merely the ability to see your list of systems and determine which are out of date with XXX packages. Yes it is all the reason why we want to change to Centos (longer EOL), and we think the stability in RHE should be worth something. It's not always the best to run the newest and the best especially on a production server. So is there anyway to do it other than from yum or to manually force install all the rpm downloaded in the cache? CentOS 3.1: sshd and pam /etc/security/limits.conf file descriptor settings problem

Why can't non-uid 0 users have more than 1024 file descriptors when logging in via ssh? I'm trying to allow a user to have a hard limit of 8192 file descriptors(system defaults to 1024) via the following setting in /etc/security/limits.conf: jdoe hard nofile 8192 But when jdoe logs in via ssh and does 'ulimit -Hn' he gets '1024' as a response. If he tries to set it with 'ulimit -Hn 8192' he gets an 'Operation not permitted' error. If jdoe instead telnets to the box, he gets the hard limit of 8192 file descriptors. Here is what happens when I set the hard limit to 512 in limits.conf: jdoe hard nofile 512 When jdoe logs in via ssh, he gets a hard limit of 512 file descriptors. The same goes for telnet. So ssh is certainly reading the limits.conf file and applying the settings, so long as nofile <= 1024. Why won't ssh allow users to have more than 1024 file descriptors??? Many thanks! -Sean
