Yes it is all the reason why we want to change to Centos (longer EOL), and we think the stability in RHE should be worth something. It's not always the best to run the newest and the best especially on a production server. So is there anyway to do it other than from yum or to manually force install all the rpm downloaded in the cache? CentOS 3.1: sshd and pam /etc/security/limits.conf file descriptor settings problem

Why can't non-uid 0 users have more than 1024 file descriptors when logging in via ssh? I'm trying to allow a user to have a hard limit of 8192 file descriptors(system defaults to 1024) via the following setting in /etc/security/limits.conf: jdoe hard nofile 8192 But when jdoe logs in via ssh and does 'ulimit -Hn' he gets '1024' as a response. If he tries to set it with 'ulimit -Hn 8192' he gets an 'Operation not permitted' error. If jdoe instead telnets to the box, he gets the hard limit of 8192 file descriptors. Here is what happens when I set the hard limit to 512 in limits.conf: jdoe hard nofile 512 When jdoe logs in via ssh, he gets a hard limit of 512 file descriptors. The same goes for telnet. So ssh is certainly reading the limits.conf file and applying the settings, so long as nofile <= 1024. Why won't ssh allow users to have more than 1024 file descriptors??? Many thanks! -Sean

Kickstart and aliased network interfaces

Hi, small(?) problem here: We have several servers which have aliased interfaces (e.g. gigabit: one alias points to the net the backupserver is in, the other one "connects" to the filer the machine needs for work). So I'd like to generate this setup with kickstart (yes, I *could* do that with cfengine or other tools, but want to have the general config in kickstart). Alas: network --bootproto=static --device=eth1:0 --ip=10.65.193.166 --netmask=255.255.255.0 isn't really taken well by anaconda, it barfs up some python-backtrace and stops the installation (it would be neat, if this would be handled friendlier, as in "would you like to continue even though I don't know what you mean"). Any solution for that? Up2date confusion

Hi, I installed 3.1 from CD and ran up2date without changing /etc/sysconfig/rhn/rhn-source. Checking some of the files it appears I have all the updates including the updates from the last few weeks. However up2date for some reason shows that I still need to update and lists old and current files in the list of available updates. Up2date Unknown GPG signatures

I just ran up2date on new Centos-3.1 installation and received about 5 of these errors. Is this something to be concerned about? The package kernel-2.4.21-15.0.4.EL is signed with an unknown GPG signature. Continue The package kernel-utils-2.4-8.37.3 is signed with an unknown GPG signature. Continue? The package GConf2-2.2.1-4 is signed with an unknown GPG signature. Continue? Apt repositories for CentOS?

Why was yum chosen? I prefer apt over yum because of features and was wondering if anyone had created an apt repository for CentOS.
