New CentOS contrib packages and 3rd party repos

A number of new packages are now in the contrib repository including cluster manager, courier-imap, maildrop and piranha - amongst others - thanks to bilbo for these. (we are still waiting for some of the src.rpms) There are also kernels for i586 in the contrib section. contrib packages are supplied by third parties, not (necessarily) tested by CentOS developers and not GPG signed by Centos. contrib is available at http://mirror.centos.org/3.1/contrib and should be on all mirrors. There is also a 3rd party yum repository for CentOS-3 at http://people.best-off.org/~rhel-devel/centos-3/ with lots of perl nodules amongst other stuff. The link above provides details of how to configure yum.conf to use the repo. Dag Wieers also provides a repository of rpms for Rhel3 that will (mostly) work with CentOS - http://dag.wieers.com/home-made/ If you do come across any there that dont work properly then please let either Dag or us know. You can add Dag's repository to your yum.conf by adding :- [dag] name=Dag RPM Repository for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 baseurl=http://apt.sw.be/redhat/el3/en/$basearch/dag We welcome 3rd party repositories as being a good way of finding additional software for CentOS, however the CentOS developers do not test the packages and cannot provide support for them. Updated ipsec-tools fixes vulnerabilities in racoon (the ISAKMP daemon)

There is an update to ipsec-tools for CentOS 3.1 https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2004-165.html refers. Updated files are :- updates/i386/RPMS/ipsec-tools-0.2.5-0.4.i386.rpm updates/i386/SRPMS/ipsec-tools-0.2.5-0.4.src.rpm which is also dependant on :- updates/i386/RPMS/initscripts-7.31.13.EL-1.centos.1.i386.rpm updates/i386/SRPMS/initscripts-7.31.13.EL-1.centos.1.src.rpm These are available at http://mirror.centos.org/3.1/ and should be on all mirrors within a few hours. I used mc-4.6.0-9.i386.rpm and it worked fine, but I wanted to know why rpm --rebuild didn't work. As for Tom's advice I don't have /etc/popt . I've tried to install midnight commander on centos3.1 final. No luck in installing it via yum install. When I download src.rpm from centos2 updates SRPMS I couldn't rebuild it. RPM --rebuild mc*.src.rpm didn't work (no rebuild option). What can I do then ? Best Regards Cooba

Samba + CUPS error

Hello. I've been trying to set CentOS 3.1 as a print server for PC running NT4 using Samba + CUPS. I've successfully done this with Fedora Core 1 but have encountered the following error after running cupsaddsmb in CentOS 3.1: WERR_INVALID_PRINTER_NAME. This error also occurs with FC1, but is solved by restarting the smb service i.e. service smb restart. Run cupsaddsmb again after restarting smb and, cupsaddsmb will succeed. However, restarting the smb service does not solve the problem with CentOS 3.1. Here's the relevant excerpt of my /etc/samba/smb.conf file (which works in FC1): [global] # workgroup = NT-Domain-Name or Workgroup-Name workgroup = SOMEGROUP # server string is the equivalent of the NT Description field server string = Samba Server # This option is important for security. It allows you to restrict # connections to machines which are on your local network. The # following example restricts access to two C class networks and # the "loopback" interface. OpenOffice.org with Java Enabled

I am currently building the latest SRPM of openoffice.org with java enabled (using Sun Java SDK version j2dk1.4.2_04-b05). If it builds, is anyone else interested in having the binary and source RPMS? If there is an interest, maybe we can get it into the contrib section of the CentOS mirrors. After it builds, I can verify the requirements ... but I think the only extra thing required will be the latest Sun Java Runtime Environment (at least j2re1.4.2_04) installed. Thanks Johnny Hughes

OpenOffice.org bug in version openoffice.org-1.1.0-15.EL

All, There is a bug in OpenOffice.org in version openoffice.org-1.1.0-15.EL where the help file doesn't open if you select help. Here is the bug and the fix: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=122263 Basically, edit the file /usr/bin/ooffice and find <value>'$lang'</value> then replace it with <value>$lang</value>. I have tested this on both CentOS and WhiteBox Enterprise Linux and the fix works. This error has been corrected in FedoraCore with version openoffice.org-1.1.0-16. Supposedly to be released soon for RHEL...but if you can't wait, fix it now. -Johnny Hughes

Newbie Questions - Yum, etc.

Hi All: My name is Peter J. Mignone and I have a little Linux experience. From what I have read about CentOS, it appears very interesting so I am trying it out. I get a header.info error when I tried yum which I have never used. How do you set up yum? Where do you point it, etc.? If my understanding is correct about the licensing, I should turn off anything pertaining to the Red Hat Network. Is there anything else that should be removed? Is there any restrictions on rpm for Red Hat enterprise. In other words, If I find a rpm on say rpmfind.net for red hat could it be used? Thank You! -- Pete
