Hi there I am just writing to find out if anyone else had an issue installing CentOS 5 on an inspiron notebook.
If I choose Desktop - Gnome in the distribution selection, after the "transferring image to hard disk" message it waits a very long time than dies with an error about not being able to run the transaction due to the following error:
Press enter to reboot.
I am able to install (in text mode) the 'server' option.
But I would really like to install the desktop environment on my laptop.
Thank you in advance.

yum groupinstall "X Window System" "Graphical Internet" "GNOME Desktop Environment" "Office/Productivity"

yum groupinstall "X Window System" "Graphical Internet" "GNOME Desktop Environment" "Office/Productivity"

Oh, right.. I know I can do it that way.
I just didn’t know if/why the installer doesn’t appear to work? I will assume this is a known issue than?

I am trying one right now in vmware. It seems to be progressing much farther than you stated. May be a problem with your laptop. Do you have enough memory? Although it is progressing great in 256 megs in the vm. It is now about 25% finished.
Hm, not sure. It has 2 GB of RAM.
It’s the ole Dell Inspiron 6400..

Definitely not lack of ram. My vmware test with the gnome desktop and 256 megs ram went great, so it has to be a hardware interaction with your lappy.

What Video card? Not ati by chance, or specifically the X1400?
Cheers!
I think the issue is that the partition I reserved for Linux wasn't large enough.
Although that error message could've been a little more clear.
Thanks, -Drew

That is a bug ... the installer does not handle lack of hard drive size correctly at all. It dies in the middle of installs and other problems and is very cryptic in its output.
We are troubleshooting that issue.

Yes, I was aware of the manual means to install it, I just wanted to be sure that the correct people were aware that (at least the dvd) installer is broken.

Hmm, this is an odd issue you seem to have. The centos5 install from DVD and net install went flawlessly on my dell inspiron 9300. With centos5, it's completely usable to the point that suspend/sleep works now. The only things I had to install separately were the nvidia proprietary drivers, and the intel ipw2200 firmware, both of which are in the RPMForge repository.
