Any downside to disabling hal service?

I understand the the way to stop the constant polling of my CD-ROM drive (only used every few years to install the OS) is to disable the hal service. Is there any downside to disabling hal other that the lack of auto-insert notification? Thanks.

Googled for Digest::MD5 and found v2.33 (http://search.cpan.org/~gaas/Digest-MD5-2.33/MD5.pm) Downloaded it untared it perl ./Makefile.PL ...error missing Digest::Base Download from CPAN perl ./Makefile.PL make make test make install Back to Digest::MD5 perl ./Makefile.PL Perl's config says that U32 access must be aligned. I figured out the ForwardX11 change, but I was too busy with the end of the semester to look into it any more than that, so never had a clue about ForwardX11Trusted. Until the start of this week, when I started having the same problems with X on my Mac after upgrading to Tiger, which was a pretty big clue, but I still wasn't sure exactly where the problem was. Johnny probably should have stressed that you need to add the ForwardX11 and ForwardX11Trusted keys on your client machine (the machine your X server is running on). Running CentOS on very old hardware

A friend has an old Pentium-133 laptop with 32MB of memory and a 1.3 GB hard disk that he wants to use as a web server for a very small community. Will CentOS (or any other RHEL derived distribution for that matter) install and run with acceptable performance on such a system, or will a specialized distribution like Damn Small Linux be a better choice? In this case, disk space is not a big concern so getting the smallest footprint is not a high priority. Alfred

Pre-i686 (PPro-P4, K6/Athlon, Cyrix M2/C3, WinChip2?) architectures take issue some applications. E.g., Red Hat, among other distros, have not bothered with pre-i686 NPTL support. There are better distros for i486 (K5, Cyrix Mx/M1, WinChip) or i586 (exactly Pentium-only) architectures than anything Fedora Core based (RHEL), SuSE Linux based (SLES/NOES), Mandrake Linux or similarly based. Although Cobind Linux is supposedly a rebuild of Fedora for older systems. And I've found it runs XFCE pretty good on as little as 48MB. CentOS 3.x might run on it, not sure what are memory requirements for it. RHEL 2.x would run even better. 64MB should be more that enough for CentOS4 as long as you use it as dedicated plain web server (no fancy stuff, no PHP, no databases, only static content). SSL would slow down things somewhat, but would be acceptable. ext3 writeback mode for root parition

I'm trying to enable writeback mode for the root partition. However, adding the normal option "rootflags=data=writeback" to my grub.conf kernel line doesn't result in writeback mode (according to `dmesg`). how to install R statistics package on Centos-4

Hi everyone, I'm a newbie and interested in installing the R statistics package on a Centos-4 machine using yum, if possible. From the R website, I see that I can download an rpm for rhel 4. I don't know if the equivalent exists for Centos. I did look through the list that 'yum list available' yields and didn't seem to find a package for R. Can you recommend how best to install R? Should I install the rhel 4 binary or should I compile from source? How do I use yum to install a downloaded rpm? etc. Thanks for your help, Allison

CentOS 4 - problem with remote X application

Hello i have a problem on CentOS 4 with starting remote x application on remote CentOS 3 od Solaris 9 boxes. The problem is: When I run it from CentOS 3 it's OK form CentOS 4 I cannot find a bad word in logs ... CentOS 4 Software Raid1 questions

I want to mirror an existing 40GB data only drive using software Raid1 on my new CentOS 4 server. The existing drive is connected to a Promise Ultra 100 TX2 controller (non-raid). I have read about mdadm and understand how to create the Raid1 on /dev/mdxx devices. However I would like to know if the existing data on the orignal 40GB drive in the system will be destroyed when I create the raid with mdadm. Also do the 2 drives after being setup with mdadm have to be reformated? Both the 40GB drives are now formated with ext3. If not, will the added 40GB drive assigned to the Raid1 atomaticly sync to the original 40GB drive. If so, what do I need to do to assure this will happend automaticly?
