Several kernel problems

hi all, I have to configure an Intel desktop motherboard based "server" with 4 disks, using linux software raid (2 raid1 arrays). The type of motherboard is Intel Desktop Board D925XEBC2 "BlackCanyon". The gigabit ethernet controller is Marvell Yukon based (Syskonnekt) and stock kernel has problems using it. It doesn't complain, lspci "sees" it (it's not a big thing at all) but nothing under /proc/net/sk98lin/ (there should be an eth0 at least). I upgraded the stcok kernel to the newer one, 2.6.9-11 EL kernel but it doesn't work too. I tried to compile it as a module and to compile the driver into the kernel. After I downloaded the tar.gz and newest driver from marvell.com and compiled it against the official EL kernel source it worked... for 2 seconds. After that I got a kernel panic. I downloaded the latest vanilla kernel, version 2.6.12.3, compiled it with the patched driver. Right now the kernel sees the ethernet card but there are three problems: - this kernel is not the overpatched, stress tested kernel source (lots of applications and 3rd party drivers require RH kernels) but I can live with it - the boot is terribly sloooooooow. at startup when udev starts the boot process hangs for a while. That should be the version mismatch between kernel version (2.6.12.3) and udev (latest is 0.60, CentOS/RHEL includes 0.39). As far as I've seen the changelogs and lkml archives an udev upgrade should help. But I don't want to replace everything. - it seems that the system constantly uses the disks! The HDD activity LED full time active. If I boot the stock kernel it doesn't do so this was after the upgrade. anybody seen such thing before? (Maybe that's udev related too but I don't think so). It seems that there's no constant writes but it's strange. I used dstat to get this result maybe there's a better option. Any comments appriciated. bye, Ago

Question driving external LCD from dell laptop

Bryan, I have the Nvidia chipset. Geforce2 go. Under XP I see a selection for "Nview display mode" and I select to try to find something that will show me refresh rates, scan rates etc... but I dont see where that is. Can you be more specific about how to view that information so I attempt to duplicate that under X and CentOS. If it's an nVidia Go Mobile, you can use the nView features of the Standardware (Open Standard, Proprietary Source) drivers. It will let you set the _exact_ scan ranges of your 32" LCD TV (I assume it's a LCD TV, given the size/scan range), as well as the geometry for the 2nd head. If it's an Intel i855G/915G, then I've had a real hissy fit with mine. I can't seem to get the i855G/915G to do anything under Linux except send the _exact_same_ scan rate as it's using for the LCD. E.g., on my Toshiba Satelitte M35 series, it sends the _exact_same_ scan rate out the miniDB15 as it uses for the LCD. I have _never_ seen that with any other notebook I've ever used with a non-i8xx/9xx GPU (they always send VESA-standard output signals). So unless I don't know about some Intel tools out there for Linux, I hate'em. ;-> Never tried ATI Radeon Mobility.

Conflict between mouse and tablet

I've been working hard to get my Wacom tablet to work as my primary pointing device. I've installed the drivers and followed the instructions at the Linux Wacom project at Sourceforge. And I've been largely successful. The drivers are working, the configuration utilities are working. I'm just one step away from success. Apparently the problem is that my mouse and my USB tablet are fighting with each other for control of input to the pointer. A guy from the Linux Wacom mailing list (I can't believe I'm on a mailing list for how to get a pointing device to work) told me that I need to edit xorg.conf so that my mouse device option points to "mouse1" and not "mice". And he referred me to the following page of explanation. http://linuxwacom.sourceforge.net/index.php/howto/mouse1 The guys who work to make the Wacom driver happen on Linux are good guys who have put in a lot of hard work to make their driver as well documented as possible. But it's a case of information overload and cryptic technobabble. They're talking way over my head. Anyway, following the gist of their advice, I edited my xorg.conf file where it says: "Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" ... to: Option "Device" "/dev/input/mouse1" ... but there was no change. ... and the guys on the Linux Wacom list take a long time to respond, if at all. So, can someone here advise on what setting in xorg.conf will get my mouse input out of the way and let my tablet do it's job? I also tried removing the whole section for the mouse specifications, thinking that if it wasn't there, it couldn't obstruct my tablet. But that caused X windows to crash. How to query the package owning the file? (no packahe manger installed)

Guys recently I had this question asked in a technical interview. How do I find out the package owning a particular file, when no package managers are installed? I am assuimg SRPMs are used to install the software? Is this actually possible? Install the Linux OS without a package manager? I know "rpm -qf filename" gives the package owning the file. But how to get the package name when I don't have any package manager? centos plus kernel

Are the changes in the centosplus kernel limited only to what is enabled the config file? There are some specific (and critical) patches I've had to apply to 2.6.9-11 to make it stable in our environment. Are kernel patches to known problems something that can be considered for CentOS plus? Upgrade RedHat 9 to Fedora

What would be the easiest way to upgrade 2000 servers from RedHat 9 to Fedora or RedHat Enterprise/CentOS? Also, 1/2 of these systems have 1 TB data partition that cannot be destroyed. Would an upgrade option work via Kickstart?

Question driving external LCD from dell laptop

I have a dell inspiron 8200 laptop running centos 4.1 just fine. I want to connect it to an external 32 inch LCD. This laptop is dual boot windows. I set windows up to 1024x768 and connected the LCD - it worked just fine. LCD max is 1333x768 I then booted Centos 4.1 and set X to be 1024x768 also. rebooted the laptop just ot make sure. I then connected the LCD and it says can't display it... Any ideas on how I might get the LCD to display CentOS X? Thanks, Jerry
