greetings,
the subject says it all right? ;->
naw......
is the 3ware Escalade 9500S series mature enough yet for CentOS?

Okay, I tried installing OpenOffice beta, and I think I messed it up, so
I wanted to uninstall it.
I thought wilcards worked, so I tried:
[root@localhost program]# rpm -e openoffice*
error: package openoffice* is not installed
Okay, so I couldn't figure out how to remove a bunch of RPM packages at
once, so I did this:
[root@localhost program]# rpm -qa | grep openoffice
And proceeded the labourous task of removing all of the RPMs listed one
by one.
But then I got down to some files that …
[View More]would say:
rpm -e openofficeorg-core01-1.9.122-1.i586
error: Failed dependencies:
openofficeorg-core01 is needed by (installed)
openofficeorg-core08-1.9.122-1.i586
So then I'd remove the dependancy, and guess what?:
rpm -e openofficeorg-core08-1.9.122-1.i586
error: Failed dependencies:
openofficeorg-core01 is needed by (installed)
openofficeorg-core01-1.9.122-1.i586
The two packages are dependant on each other so I can't remove either.
*sigh*
So, how do I remove them?

I've looked up the Kpilot manual, and I think I have an okay idea of
what's going on with it.
I'm trying to get it's detection feature to find my Palm Pilot. CentOS
does seem to be able to recognize it, because if I run lsusb when
running a hot sync, I get the following:
[root@localhost dev]# lsusb
Bus 001 Device 010: ID 0830:0060 Palm, Inc. Palm Tungsten T / Zire 71
That's encouraging. My Palm Pilot is actually a Tungsten E, not a T, but
I'm not sure that's a level of detail that …
[View More]matters at this point.
The Kpilot documentation suggest that I look for the palm pilot at
/dev/ttyUSB0. That didn't work, but I noticed in my /dev/ directory that
there was also a ttyUSB1. That didn't work either. But then I noticed
that both were only apparent when I was hot syncing my Palm, so they
must be connected to it.
Any ideas, then, as to why Kpilot is not acknowledging them as a Palm
device the way that lsusb does?

I was doing a YUM update, and it found about 70 packages to download and
install.
While installing, this message popped up a couple of times:
/sbin/ldconfig: File /usr/lib/libk3bdevice.so.2.0.0.#prelink#.X8kEMh is
empty, not checked.
And then after about three or four times of saying that, the YUM update
stopped without finishing. So I started it again, and it picked up where
it left off, so I figured it was no big deal. Then, about mid way
through, it did it again.
I went through this …
[View More]process a couple more times, and eventually it
updated all the packages.
But what does it mean, and is it significant? Should I care?

I am getting occasional seek error on my boot drive.
The messages are as follows:
pshda: dma_intr: status = 0x51 { Drive ReadySeekComplete Error }
hda: dma_intr: error= 0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC }
ide: failed opcode was: unknown
Everything seems to be working fine but these errors do
have me concerned.
The last time they occurred I was created a fairly large cpio
backup file in the '/tmp' directory.
The drive has been checked via fsck, and any errors found were
reported to be …
[View More]corrected.
Should I take some kind of action on this, or just ignore the errors?

Hmm... it was tough to get into CentOS this morning. I booted up, and
after the screen flickered a bit, I got an error message that said some
png file couldn't be found (Sorry I was in a bit of a panic and didn't
think to copy down the whole error message verbatum). I think it was
"throbbing.png", which is a little salacious sounding, but that's what
it was.
Anyway, it says this image can't be found, and there's nothing else on
the screen but the error message and a button to click "OK". …
[View More]So I click
it, and nothing happens. Ever. No matter how many times I say Okay, it
just sits there.
So I tried restarting X, using my newly learned ctrl-alt-backspace key
sequence. When X comes back, same message. Because I can't think of
anything else to do, I try ctrl-alt-backspace a bunch of times in a row,
and then after a few times, the error message changes. It says "X seems
to be crashing. I will try to restart with a different greeting screen".
Fine by me, so I click "OK", and I get this really plain, light blue and
grey login screen. I login with my usual personal account, and I'm in.
I don't want to go through *that* again. But I'm not sure what the issue
is. I was doing two things last night. One is install OpenOffice Beta,
which, after help from this list, finally worked. I was also wanting to
install new themes for KDE, but that didn't get far as I downloaded one
theme, and I couldn't get past the ./configure part because I didn't
specify the right perameters or something. But in the process of trying
to figure out why the ./configure failed, I attempted to update KDE
following instructions on their web site. Part of the exercise was to
get qt installed, as the theme seemed to require it. But all I did was
add a repository from the KDE site and do a um install of some KDE
related programs.
There is one other thing that I notice about my system that's different.
In the top left hand of my screen, on my panel, the CentOS logo is gone,
and in it's place is the icon for a "Prominent North American Linux
Distributor". Where'd *that* come from?

It seems that unstable PowerNow support on the Tyan S2895 is not limited
to Linux according to this review:
http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-296-1.htm
Their solution was to upgrade the BIOS as well.
