Otherwise, no. It is stock except for the csgfs packages from the CentOS-csgfs repository and one or two other rpm packages. I want to keep the machine up to date, but I guess I'll have to be careful with the kernel updates. Any others that could cause problems? -- Bowie

Vacation message issue

Hi there, I use CentOs with Bluequartz, all is working fine but the vacation message. When vacation message is activated, incoming mail is processed, but the sender get´s this message: ----- Transcript of session follows ----- No home directory for user /home/.sites/143/site2/.users/100/userid/.vacation_msg 554 5.3.0 unknown mailer error 1 Any idea about this? Kernel update and csgfs

My apologies if this is a stupid question, but I'm not familiar with how kernel updates and kernel modules interact. I see that there are some kernel updates available via yum: ============================================================================ = Package Arch Version Repository Size ============================================================================ = Installing: kernel x86_64 2.6.9-22.0.2.EL update 10 M kernel-devel x86_64 2.6.9-22.0.2.EL update 3.5 M kernel-smp x86_64 2.6.9-22.0.2.EL update 9.6 M Updating: kernel-smp-devel x86_64 2.6.9-22.0.2.EL update 3.6 M Will updating to this new kernel cause problems with the cman-kernel, GFS-kernel, or dlm-kernel modules? Will yum warn me about those types of issues? As a more generic question, is it generally safe to let "yum update" install the updates it finds? Thanks, Bowie

LVM

How many people use LVM's in their production servers? Are they reliable for use in these sorts of systems? I am asking this because i was reading the LVM Howto about upgrading discs etc. Regards, Peter

System hangs silently

I have a total of 20 CentOS 4.1 systems running on fairly new hardware. About 6 of them are experiencing strange hangs without any indication -- nothing in /var/log/messages nor on the console -- sometime within 10-30 minutes after a reboot. The systems still responds to ping but you can't ssh to it. At the console, you could type "root" at the user prompt but it hangs immediately after hitting enter. Memory scan of all systems show no error. Any idea how to troubleshoot this problem. The system's not responsive to do any troubleshooting and nothing abnormal is in the log. We running htis kernel: kernel-smp-2.6.9-11.EL.i686.rpm. Thanks for any help.

grub.conf LABEL location

I have change my disk from hdc to hda. I need to change the LABEL information in grub.conf so hda is / and not hdc. Where is that. Thanks, jerry

Well this doesn't sound in any way healthy. You're going to want to crawl through your apache logs and see if anything looks out of place. Odd GET or POST requests, SQL statements that don't look right etc. You might also want to look in /var/tmp and /tmp as well as in your DOCUMENT_ROOT, and remember to do an ls -la to show hidden directories. There are a couple of things out there that create a directory called ... in /var/tmp etc. You'll also want to look at your web software to make sure you're running secure versions etc. and make sure you've got all things updated. = = = = = = Based on this discussion http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=991 357 I think you have been hacked. Process KOTFARE using 99% CPU

Dear Friends, I have process run in CENTOS 4.2 call kotfare that is using 99% CPU, it run with owner apache. I kill process KOTFARE and restart apache, after some hours this process return. I did find file with name *kotfare* and I din't find. Please, help me. Adriano

kernel update inconsistency...

Hi, New kernels both up and smp via yum are installed not updated. The same happens for the kernel-devel package -- but the kernel-smp-devel package is updated... Cheers, MaZe.
