Good value for /proc/sys/vm/min_free_kbytes

Hi, what would be a good value for /proc/sys/vm/min_free_kbytes on a Dual-CPU EM64T System with 8 GB of memory. Kernel is 2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp. I know that the default might be a bit low. Unfortunatelly the documentation is a bit weak in this area. We are experiencing responsiveness problems (and higher than expected load) when the system is under combined memory+network+disk-IO stress. Up2Date and yum failing

I have 2 new servers built from 4.3 isos. I want to update them but cannot do that because of update issues: Up2date fails because of a several dependency issues. yum update fails because of a problem with the au mirrors. yum can find the mirrors but not the headers. Cheers

Initiator for iscsi?

Anyone running centos with an iscsi filesystem mounted? If so: What version of centos? Which iscsi package? What filesystem are you using on the mount? Does it perform like you'd expect? Thanks, peter

Howdy all, Any recommendation as to the right way to config X. Last time I did was using X86Setup back in OpenBSD 2.7 days. What's the Xorg tool? How do I invoke it? Looks like I just need to fix the ranges, maybe they mean sync vert & horiz or something. Or should I be typing gdm instead of startx? Anyone using pam_ldap ? need clarifications

Hi list, I'm using a SSH gateway where our users are authenticated against an openldap server. It's working great and the users can also change their password with the 'passwd' command. My problem is that recently I've tested our users's password for weak entries (with john the ripper) and found that all the password changed with 'passwd' and thus pam_ldap where stored in the directory in cleartext form instead of SSHA. I have "password-hash {SSHA}" in slapd.conf and though that means that SSHA hashes was enforced for all stored password. Both servers are Centos 4.4 fully updated and everything came from standard repositories. Is there someone who manage to use pam_ldap and the use of the 'passwd' command result in a SSHA hashed's password in the directory? Thanks, kfx

What built in utilities are there that can evaluate XML XPath statements in CentOS? Its needed to grab certain info from <a href="some.html">some</a> from a page with a python, perl or shell script. Hints on what to use would be appreciated. Chris

Scripting port scans

Hi, I need to test one specific port on a serie of Ip addresses that I own, I thought about using nmap or telnet, but both return the same value, no matter if the port is open or filtered. Anyone has an idea, before I start scripting to analyse the output of the command? Regards, Ugo

I have downloaded the php5 rpms from Centos and successfully am running them on RHEL4. However, there is no rpm for php-mssql. Has anyone created one that could be installed on RHEL4? Thanks. - Mark

Sorry if I missed that, by the way thanks to all who reply. I already get the points of using Yum and will uninstall the already installed postfix from the source using checkinstall as advise from the other lists and will use Yum instead.
