Will Centos work on Biostar NF4 X4-A7

Hi, our client wants us to use Biostar NF4 X4-A7 (nForce4-4X) based computer. I do not have access to nForce4-4X based computer to try. Anyone successful with C4.4 installation? Thanks, David Hrbáč

Getting kernel source for 2.6.9-42.ELsmp

Hello! I need to get an arcnet device driver up and running. Normally it appears to be distributed with linux, but not installed. So, I need to compile and install it, naturally. So, where is the kernel souce for 2.6.9-42.ELsmp? I can find kernel source for 2.6.9. BTW, I obtained 2.6.9 and tried compiling it, but all I got was *.o files and insmod: error inserting 'arcnet.o`: -1 Invalid module format Seems that the rest of the /lib/modules/2.6.9-42.ELsmp/kernel/drivers/net appear to be *.ko files. Yes, I was able to get SATA working by going to AHCI (my BIOS has the option). However, for the DG965RYCK, as of kernel 2.6.9-42.0.3.EL, I will need to update the ethernet driver, the video driver (for X), and the sound driver(s). And I have still not fully investigated any possible penalties from booting with pci=nommconf (without which I can't boot). YMMV, as always. At this point, I'm going to hold off and see what upstream gets included in 4.5. The fact that fedora works makes me hopeful that the hardware support will work its way into the enterprise product. This IS a "holy war" kind of question! :-) Most people have strong opinions about this topic and tend to be very black and white about "this way is the best!". In the real world, different things impress different employers. Some employers give a lot of credibility to certifications, some don't. If you're trying to get a break into a certain niche, every little bit helps. The RCHE cert does require hands on effort, so it's not looked at as a "paper certification". Your IT background is pretty decent anyway, so it's not like you're really starting from scratch. Especially the Solaris and HP experience is relevant to administering Linux. Btw, I got started with CentOS for the same reason as you. I wanted to pursue the RHCE and couldn't afford to fork out the cash for a Redhat license. (Are you listening Redhat? CentOS is bringing you business because it helps IT people get experience and eventually certification with your product!) I always get pulled into Windows related projects with my current employer because my professional experience is more Windows heavy. I would like to get on a project that involves Redhat, but can't see that happening unless I give them some kind of justification that I have some level of competence with Linux. Direct job related experience with Linux, of course, would be the best. But if you don't have that experience, and you can't get the opportunity to get it it because you don't have previous experience (the old catch-22), then a fairly well regarded cert is going to help justify giving you a chance. The cert on its own probably won't clinch anything for you, but the cert plus other real world experiences here and there might do the trick. PG

Hi All, I'm pretty new to this list and to CentOS, so forgive me if this kind of thing is shunned. I have really enjoyed following some threads on this list and learning what everyone out there is doing with the OS. I actually got started on CentOS when researching how to study for the RHCE without forking out big cash for Red Hat licenses, a donation is coming soon. Anyway, I'm looking to do some part time Linux work (I'll work cheap, possibly free for a non-profit) and would like some suggestions on how others on the list have found odd job work. My goal with this work is to get some resume building Linux experience, help me pass the RHCE exam, and ultimately begin doing contact work or move into a full-time Linux/Unix position. I have two years experience administering HP-UX and Sun Solaris for a University, about 8 years total IT experience, and I've used Linux at home since 1998 or so; I just need some "real-world" Linux experience. I feel confident I can accomplish just about any Linux project using my broad background of experience and learning a little along the way. The main problem I see is that I only have 10-15 hours per week to give this, as I have a full-time IT job as well, so flexibility on time of day/time of week of work is key. Strange issue with device-mapper lib in CentOS

Hello all, a couple of weeks ago I've been installing CentOS 4.2 on a very-old server machine with MSI server board based on Intel GX440 chipset, two Xeons 500Mhz and one 1Gig of RAM. There is an AMI MegaRaid 467 installed as a storage controller, which causes some troubles with installation, as stock CenOS4 install and production kernels doesn't have older megaraid.ko module compiled, but there are a lot of not so very difficult ways to overcome it. After a clean-and-relatively-fast install first of all I had up2date-d it to CentOS 4.4, did some basic initial reconfigurations, turned it off and left it lay around doing nothing. Today its time has come, and I turned it on. While booting I've seen a message "Segmentation fault" just after a line about "Starting up LVM2". That's confused me a bit. Logged it as root, typed vgdisplay, got a normal output and a message "Segmentation fault" after it. lvdisplay performed just the same - normal display of all LVM logical volumes and a "Segmentation fault" at the bottom. Next step was obvious: # rpm -Va Huh, here we are. There's a bunch of RPMs with binary files in them changed since they've been installed. Just looks like it's a virus job I thinked. But, wait! That's very strange! This server has been laying around turned off and doing nothing since the moment I've done the installation of the system. There were NO possible time for a virus to infect a system. Well, in any case, I took on my special LiveCD with a ClamAV on it and a RamDisk for freshclam to store updated virus databases, booted it, mounted possibly infected system and checked it with clamscan. There were NO viruses found. Well, I though that this might be caused by a faulty SCSI disk in array, that distort the data that's being written to it, instead of informing host that there's a bad block here. Ok, that's easy to check. Let me go to the single mode, reinstall distorted RPMs using rpm -Uvh --replacepkgs, do a couple of 'sync's, remount all filesystems with -O ro,sync, and check installed rpm's with a rpm -Va. Headed on, done all above, got nothing. After a reinstall all files became correct, and LVM tools got back to a correct behavior without "Segmentation fault". Hmm... that's strange, I thought. Well, at least ATM I've got a correctly functioning system without viruses. Huh, well, now it's time to reboot and check how does it performs. I'm going to do unattended reboots in future, it should reboot seamlessly without excess questions. # shutdown -r now Reboot went smoothly, but just as LVM2 was initializing, I've got "Segmentation fault" message again! Damn! What's wrong?! Logged in, rpm -Va - gotcha! Again, device-mapper RPM was broken. Well, let's reinstall it again, sync, remount root readonly, check with rpm -V device-mapper. Done that - all seems to be ok, no output from the rpm -V = files are intact. Rebooted again. Run: [root@omega MegaMgr5.20]# rpm -V device-mapper ..5..... /lib/libdevmapper.so.1.02 That's it. After each and every reboot I've got this file corrupted. Looks like it's not a faulty HDD trouble, and it's not a faulty RAID controller. Most likely something corrupts this file during shutdown process or during boot process. Haven't got enough time today to investigate more deeply, going to continue with it tomorrow. recommends on CentOS + Via Epia CN10000EG

I'm considering building a network gateway using a Via EpiaCN10000EG motherboard like seen here: http://www.logicsupply.com/product_info.php/cPath/79/products_id/444 I've heard that this is a pretty recent mobo and drivers for it are in Ubuntu but that a 2.6.9.x CentOS kernel might have troubles with it. Anyone have any opinions on this mobo? Thanks jed
