Cannot install driver under CentOS/ VMware ?

Trying the most basic 'vanilla hello world' kernel driver, install using insmod, and trying in module_init to do a simple kmalloc() fails, kmalloc returns NULL - i.e. cannot allocate memory. The driver loads fine under another non-VM system. Is this a CentOS/VMware quirk ? Does anyone know of a workaround or is it just a fact of life that you cannot use insmod once the system is running ? After all, the 'normal' kernel modules are able to load OK at startup. CentOS 4.4 and ACLs

Hey all, I'm using CentOS 4.4, and want to start doing some work with ACLs (getfacl/setfacl). Unfourtunately, no matter what I do, I get the same error over and over again: setfacl: <filename>: Operation not supported I've tried enabling/disabling the acl and xattr modes on my root partition (the one I'm working on), I've tried moving the file to other directories, rebooting the system after I make the changes... nothing. Right now, the system is set up as follows: /etc/fstab: LABEL=/ / ext3,acl defaults 1 1 % mount /dev/sda5 on / type ext3,acl (rw) ... Should I have a particular kernel module loaded? getfacl seems to work fine, but it may be deferring to the lower-level chmod permissions that are already there. If there is a kernel module to load, I can't tell what it should be, since there are none that have "acl" in their names under /lib/modules/<kernel version>. Please help! CentOS 4 and Intel D965 motherboards

Does anyone have information on support for Intel D965-based motherboards for CentOS 4 (i386)? I've got a DG965RYCK that fails a CentOS 4.4 install early on (problems scanning the PCI bus). Fedora Core 6 installs just fine. If anyone has any information, or magic boot parameters to try, please let me know. ("Works for me" is OK too). Thanks much. Dave Thompson UW-Madison

Question on installing 2.6.18

Hi, I have a need to install 2.6.18 kernel. After I configure, make, make modules, make install (all that is good). The last thing I do is 'make install'. This also modifies grub.conf and adds an entry for my new kernel. However it leaves the old kernel as still the default. Is there a way to have it automatically set my new kernel as the default in grub.conf so when I reboot the new kernel is active. Thanks, Jerry

Generator Microsoft Word 11 (filtered medium) Hi there, I' m trying to build a home made NAS/SAN server using Centos 4. I have an old HP ML series server with support for IDE disks only. So I thought that I could by some pci sata controller to use sata disks that are cheaper and faster than IDE' s. My question is , does anyone have used the Conceptronic PCI Sata Card sucefully in CentOS ? CentOS Compatible Graphics Card for Second Life

Hi I have been experimenting with the Linux Alpha client for Seeocnd Life, but the graphics do not render properly due to incomptibility of SL with the on-board Intel graphics adapter. Can anyone recommend a graphics adapter that is both Second Life AND CentOS 4.4 Linux compatible that will plug into the PCI bus? Thanks very much indeed. Clive

Installing X on a Minimal Build

hey, any way I can install X onto the 'minimal build' via yum? I'd just reinstall, but am working with a 2TB system and it would take hours to re-do. Just curious... yum install __________________ I have rpmforge installed, so at least i'm pointed at the dag repos. -karl
