Extremely slow disk transfers with SATA disks

I have installed CentOS 4.2, recently, on new computer. Everything seemed to work fine. However, we've found out that disk transfers are incredibly slow, and I just can't figure out what to do in order to fix it. Computer is now running CentOS 4.3 (updated it 1 hour ago), and same thing is still present. I hoped kernel upgrade might fix it, but it didn't. Computer has 2 SATA disks, 200GB (Maxtor 6Y200M0) and 80GB (Maxtor 6L080M0). There are no errors or any other indications of problems in logs/dmesg. Copying 500MB file takes around 210 seconds. Around 2.3MB/sec. Doesn't matter if I am copying from one hard disk to another, or onto the same hard disk. On my computer, number of blocks in (bi) gets into tens of thousands, while problematic computer has 1500-3000 bs/second. Does anyone know what I might do in order to find what the problem might be? I couldn't find any SATA specific tools, which might help with troubleshooting. hdparm -tT tests show: /dev/sda: Timing cached reads: 2408 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1202.98 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 150 MB in 3.02 seconds = 49.61 MB/sec /dev/sdb: Timing cached reads: 2628 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1313.54 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 166 MB in 3.02 seconds = 54.88 MB/sec All filesystems are ext3. This "problematic" computer has nforce3 motherboard, I have nforce2. Same CentOS, but no SATA on my computer. This really affects complete performance of computer, and any help or ideas are welcome. Odd installation hang.

For the archives: I had an odd installation hang on an older Athlon MB; KT133 I believe. SuSE 10.0 and Fedora Core 5 installers ran fine; CentOS 4.2 and 4.3 hung with the last line on the screen referencing running /sbin/loader (or is that /sbin/installer....don't typically see it enough to remember); the cursor froze at that point. SuSE 10.0 successfully installed on this box. After trying all the normal tricks, like turning ACPI off, using the BIOS IRQ table, etc, I noticed that the FC5 installer mentioned something about disabling IRQ6. IRQ6?!? That's the floppy controller; but there's no floppy drive configured or cabled. Hmmm.... no place in the BIOS to disable the floppy controller ?!? Ok, let's tell it it has a 3.5 1.44MB floppy (even though it doesn't!), and not to stop on floppy errors. Lo and behold, that fixed the hang. Something in the CentOS 4 installer that runs right after /sbin/loader was hanging, unless it had a floppy out there, even when there was no floppy out there. But, and I repeat, SuSE 10.0 installed flawlessly, and the FC5 installer came up fine. Shells

This is giving me some grief, and I couldn't get anything decent from Google. What shell is the best to allow things like vacation to work, but not allow logins. It seems that /bin/false used to work in RedHat 9, but not in Centos 4. -- MailScanner is like deodorant... You hope everybody uses it, and you notice quickly if they don't!!!!

Hello all, I have this nice Sun quad fast ethernet card that I would like to use in my Centos server. I have used it in the past on my old server without problems. I have been googling around, but have not been able to find a solution. Does anybody hee have an idea what the problem migt be, or how to tackle the problem? for the record: I am running the 2.6.9-34.EL kernel, but had the problem with older kernels as well. As the card worked under Centos 4 on my Asus K7M mobo, it looks as a mobo or bios problem, but I am not sure. Sendmail vulnerability

Dear All, I noticed that sendmail rpms were updated by yum a day or so ago, however, how can I check if the versions installed are patched for the recently exposed exploit.... I guess that since I am running sendmail-8.13.1-3 (which appears to be the latest according to yum) and the articles describe 8.13.6 as having the fix that I may be vulnerable.... P.

4.3 upgrade transaction error (smartd & smartctl)

Anyone else run into this error? Will renaming this files allow to me run a successful yum update? Is there a better way? ipw2200 & ieee80211 latest versions

Has anyone else had problems compiling the ieee80211 ? I am getting kzalloc errors. I see there was a fix for RHEL but obviously isnt picking up the fact I am on Centos. Ian

CentOS SPARC Exception

I'm intalling CentOS Sparc on a Sun Netra T1, and i got a warning that says: the disk geometry (17274, 64, 32 )deosn't match with the disk geometry label (7508, 19, 248). I continued with the installation and after i choose the packages i need, i got an exception: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/anaconda", line 1176 in intf.run (id, dispatch, configFileData) File "/local/builder/tmp/anaconda-10.1.1.25 //usr /lib/anaconda/text.py", line 510, in run Then the installation aborts.
