Problems with 4.3 install - didnt write boot record

the first time i tried to install centos on my fileserver it detected my reiserfs drives but then didnt give me a kernel to actually access them - strike one now im trying centos on my mail server, wipe the drives, created a mirrored raid array from the setup, (took over 14 hours to format and sync) finally finished the install AND IT DIDNT WRITE THE BOOT RECORD! when it rebooted i got my grub menu from GENTOO! - strike two, now im back into the install cd, trying to figure out how to install grub like the install should have done for me, but there is no grub command at the prompt (trying to use tab completion) im ready to hurt something im so frustrated, can anyone help me out here? ive seen http://www.dur.ac.uk/a.d.stribblehill/mirrored_grub.html but without the grub command that page is useless. Im sure someone has to be booting RH/CentOS off mirrored software raid, some help please! id like to get this thing going tonight if possible, thanks! Nick

This box will work great. yum error

heartbeat-2.0.4 in the Testing Repo

We have added heartbeat-2.0.4 for CentOS 4 into the testing repository at dev.centos.org. Copy the testing CentOS-Testing.repo file from here: http://dev.centos.org/centos/4/ to /etc/yum.repos.d/ , then use this command to install heartbeat: yum --enablerepo=c4-testing install heartbeat Report issues with this to the heartbeat-2.0 tracker here: http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=1305

Iptables port forwarding help

Hello, I have a webcam that I wish to view from the internet. It is a wireless linksys model with an ip address of 192.168.1.15. I have it set on port 8081, 192.168.1.15:8081. I am using the IP Masquerade HowTo script. Here's the rule I added to my firewall script: EXTIF="ppp0" INTIF="eth1" EXTIP="`$IFCONFIG $EXTIF | grep inet | cut -d : -f 2 | cut -d \ -f 1`" $IPTABLES -A FORWARD -i $EXTIF -o $INTIF -p tcp --dport 8081 -m state \ --state NEW,ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT $IPTABLES -A PREROUTING -t nat -p tcp -d $EXTIP --dport 8081 \ -j DNAT --to 192.168.1.15:8081 Its not working. Sorting of passwd/group files

Is there a program on CentOS which will sort my passwd/group etc. files by username or uid/gid? On Suse I can do this with a sysconfig switch and Suseconfig, is there something similar on RH-based systems? rescue boot - udev question

Is there some documentation about what happens to populate /dev when you boot the install disk in rescue mode and it automatically mounts an installed system and suggests that you chroot to /mnt/sysimage? With Centos 3.x you could do the mounts yourself in cases where it wouldn't work automatically and end up looking approximately the same. With 4.x, after the chroot, /dev appears to be empty unless the automatic mount worked. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Pause after network initialization

Is there a "proper" way to put in a pause after network initialization to make sure the network *really* is up? I've had this issue for a while with e1000 cards (even on 100MB networks), where the first NFS mount will fail b/c the network reports up but isn't, really. Now, I'm also seeing the same issue on cluster nodes hooked to a switch with jumbo frames enabled. I used to hack it with a 'sleep 60' at the end of the "start" function in /etc/init.d/network, but that goes away whenever initscripts gets updated. My new hack is to put 'mount -a -t nfs' in /etc/rc.local. Any other suggestions? -- Joshua Baker-LePain Department of Biomedical Engineering Duke University
