Hi, Which one of these listings would I put in my yum.conf file to upgrade my centos 3.6 to centos 4.2? http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4.2/os/ alpha or ppc? I had the same problem with 4.3 on one system out of 4 I recently built. I checked iptables, /etc/sysconfig/networks , /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 (and eth1) , /etc/resolv.conf etc etc. What was strange is I could ping , nslookup etc from that system but could never ssh to it. Same error message your posting. I ended up using a mondorescue disk from another system that worked fine and then fixed the configs for the different network configuration. If you do find out the root cause of that please share it as it bugged me not actually finding out why the same configuration process on 4 systems failed on 1 system (all the same exact hardware as well). Problems with SSH

Hi, i have 2 linux machines on a corporative network, from my machine(Local Machine)i Have ssh acces to the serer typing ssh user@nombreservidor But when i try to connect from the server to my local machine i have a message "name or service not known", it doesn`t matter if i do it ss user or as root If i type ssh user@iplocal i have a message "no route to host" it already verified that both systems(local and server) have SSH running by typing service sshd status, and the response is "ssh is running (pidxxxx) The OS in the local machine is CentOS 4.3 in the server is WhiteBox 4 Anyone have aan idea? please, I need help Thanks ----------------------------------------------------------- Sign up and get your 30GB webmail at www.30gigs.com now!

/sbin/ifconfig -a Samba: 1. check the logs in /var/log for helpfull data. 2. iptables may be your culprit. by default it will block incoming smb connections from your windows systems to that linux system. So you will need to modify /etc/sysconfig/iptables to allow the ports and protocols into your linux server otherwise they will just get dropped. You can probably browse from the linux box to a windows network (as iptables allows outbound connections from the system by default) but not vice-a-versa. Your next question may be how to modify IP tables to allow in smb connections. man iptables cp /etc/sysconfig/iptables /etc/sysconfig/iptables.orig vi /etc/sysconfig/iptables add some entries like this (i am unsure of the smb ranges needed so I am using 135 as an example although I think the range is 135-139 and 445) where x.x.x.x is the workstation you want to trust the connection from. Depending on what smb needs you may need udp and/or tcp entries in iptables to allow in the traffic. -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -s x.x.x.x -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 135 -j ACCEPT -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -s x.x.x.x -p udp -m udp --dport 135 -j ACCEPT Issue /etc/init.d/iptables restart to make the changes active. -greg ________________________________ From: centos-bounces(a)centos.org [mailto:centos-bounces@centos.org] On Behalf Of Chris Peikert Sent: Thursday, April 27, 2006 8:17 AM To: 'CentOS mailing list' Subject: [CentOS] How to find your IP Address Ok guys a quick newb question. I have been reading up on the Red Hat Enterprise 4 for dummies book along with installing and playing with the configurations of Cent OS 4. I have yet been able to find any information on how to find out what your IP address is. I have it set to use DHCP from our Windows server and I looked under the network card configuration settings but can not find any command or GUI place that will show your IP Address. When I go to a windows machine and try to ping the Cent box by its name it cant find the host. Now I know I can go into the DHCP server but I need to learn how to find it on the Linux box. Another question has to deal with Samba. I set up samba using the GUI interface then ran service smb start command to start up samba. The book says I should be able to browse the network with a windows machine now and find the linux box but I am unable to. Any clues why its not showing up on the network?

Netconsole - how do I tell id a driver offers polling?

Appologies in advance if there is an obvious answer to this. I'm experimenting with netconsole. When I try to insmod the netconsole module it complains that eth0 doesn't support polling. Any idea where I can find a list of supported NICs? How can I workout if a NIC driver supports polling? Many thanks Daveh

smux service (port 199)

Hi, when I run a nmap localhost I see that port 199 is open for the smux service but when I check the services gui in runlevel 3 or 5 I don't find it. It's also not in /etc/init.d/ At the moment almost everything is inactive except for some well known services like httpd crond etc. but mux is still there. Does anyone know how to colse this service? regards, ivago

Hi, First, we need to mount stage2.img and alter its contents. copy this file from the cdrom to somewhare in your computer say # cp /media/cdrom/CentOS/base/stage2.img /home/mydist First, we mount the image using mkdir /mnt/anaconda mount -o loop /home/mydist/stage2.img /mnt/anaconda Now we need to copy the contents to a directory where we can alter the files. We used tar to package the contents of the directory, and then untarred them where we could work on them. cd /mnt/anaconda tar -cvf /home/imtiyaz/stage2.tar . cd /home/imtiyaz mkdir stage2 cd stage2 tar -xvf /home/imtiyaz/stage2.tar With the contents of stage2.img in an editable directory, you can now alter the images used by the installer located in usr/share/anaconda/pixmaps and the images used in the installation slideshow in usr/share/anaconda/pixmaps/rnotes. You can also edit the text in the left sidebar, which are in HTML format, in usr/share/anaconda/help/[locale].
