Migration question?

Hi, Im new in this list and I have recently started a project to migrate all our servers from RHEL to Centos. My question is if anyone have any tips/tricks regarding online migration from RHEL to Centos, especially between ver. 5? I have read most stuff I have found thru Google and the Centos wiki and most migrations have worked fine except the RHEL 5 - Centos 5 migration. Hit a few bumps and lost the rpm db and such... Any tips/pointers/tricks/experiences are welcome. Yes, I know a clean reinstall is the best thing to do. Cheers

Very slow disk performance on CentOS 4.5

I recently moved my CentOS 4.5 disk from a Lenovo ThinkCentre M52 (3.2 GHz Pentium 4) to a Lenovo ThinkCentre M55 (3.4 GHz Core 2 Duo). I had to install the SMP kernel, but other than that everything just worked. I did have an issue with accidentally initializing my /boot partition, but that was my own fault. But the system was not feeling right. Some things just seemed to be slower, but I couldn't put my finger on it. Today, I noticed that disk I/O was very slow to one of the disks (the boot drive, /dev/ hda). It took over 18 minutes to unzip a set of files that used to take just under 2 minutes on the old system. Sure enough, if I copied the files to the second drive (/dev/sda), I was able to unzip them in under 2 minutes again. When I accidentally clobbered the /boot partition, I learned that there were two IDE controllers on this motherboard, which explained why one SATA drive was named /dev/hda and the other SATA drive /dev/ sda. But I find it hard to believe that there would be such a performance difference between the two controllers/drivers/disks. And I know the slow disk worked just fine before I moved it to the new system. Any ideas what could cause a drive to be so slow? Could it be that DMA is disabled on the drive (see the output of hdparm below)? Also, why does hdparm work for one disk but not the other? rpmsave files and pagasus

Hello I just upgraded Centos, and now doing some post upgarde task to make sure every thing is fine. First of all, it seems upgrade add rpmsave extension to configuration files, which we should copy them back example is /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf.rpmsave also what is Pegasus ? there is a lot of rpmsaved in /var/lib/pegasus example : /var/lib/Pegasus/prev_repository_2007-08-30-1188481293.980554182.rpmsave Thanks

Fox An excellent start. With regard to firewalls, a simpler if less-secure approach it to open the firewall to trusted machines on the local net. Might want to address the "insecure" parameter in /etc/exports for those using NAT. Fixing a few typos ("variou configuration" "But bere is") would take you a bit further down the road in an asymptotic approach toward perfection. :-) Regards, Phil Hi! Phil, I joined in the list and am waiting for the first digest to get a feel of it. I somehow just felt that making the article over my blog and then once I feel it is complete, submitting it to the documentation will be much easier for me to keep a track of things. Generally I tend to miss out quite a few mails in these lists... :( Thanks for the correntions. Also I have added a long list of options that are available for use in /etc/exports. I am not sure how insecure affects NAT users. I am no Linux guru, though I have been using it since 6-7 years now, I am much more a enthusiast than a pro... That is one reason I am interested in getting sufficient and right document in place. Though we have lot of document it is very scattered, so I am playing my part as much as I can to get a consolidated documentation in CentOS and Fedora. Kind regards, Rohit
