HI! Friends, in followup to my last article<http://mytechrantings.blogspot.com/2007/08/centos-5-selinux-xen-squid-yum-c…>regarding my experiences with setting up CentOS, taking the advice from Phil, I have written an article dealing with NFS setup<http://mytechrantings.blogspot.com/2007/08/nfs-network-file-system.html>. And ofcourse you are welcome to put in your thoughts and knowledge in the topic there :D I am planning to write more artciles in this series, already working on them, one is on YUM setups for LANs and another one is on XEN and Virt manager. What is eating my memory?

The tail of two systems and one hard drive. I install centos 5 on a HD while it is in a Compaq with 256Mb memory. After install, i am in graphics mode (Gnome) and top reports not quite all 256Mb used. Then I move the HD to a decTOP with 512Mb memory. I am running non-graphics (init 3). I ssh into the unit and top reports not quite all of that used..... So what ate up more than 256Mb memory (X is not running)? Perhaps there is something I did not clean up properly wrt the move.

Hi All, I am looking for a Point Of Sales software which can run on centos5, does anyone have good pointer for this. It's for an organic shop open by a non-profit organization. I am helping to set it up. Sorry if I am out of topic, I am following this list this few months and find it very helpful. Just hope to get some help. Thanks in advance. David

OT: Suggestions for RAID HW for 2 SATA drives in Dell PowerEdge SC

Looking at the Dell PowerEdge 440SC web page for Colombia. The box will have two 250 GB SATA drives. The HD controller is: SAS 5IR SAS,Internal Raid Adapter (SAS5IR) for HD Configuration) the options are: (1) Add-in SAS5iR (SATA/SAS Controller)-RAID 0 (ASASR0) (2) Onboard SATA, 2 Drives connected to Onboard SATA Controller No RAID (MST2) (3) Add-in SAS5iR (SATA/SAS Controller) which supports 1-2 Hard Drives-No RAID (ASAS) (4) Add-in SAS5iR (SATA/SAS Controller)-RAID 1 (ASASR1) Apparently the cost for them is the same. Option 1 (RAID 0) or Option 4 (RAID 1)? Suggestions solicited! TIA, Lanny BTW: I plan to put CentOS on it. If Dell installs Linux, with 1 year support, down here they charge: (a) Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES 4, 1 year subscription to Red Hat Network, English (RH4ES1) [about US$400] (b) SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10, 1 CPU, 1 YR Subscription, FI (SL101S1) [about US$160]

MIssing Log Entries in /var/log/messages

Hello, has something changed in CentOS 5 logging behavior? I get no entries in /var/log/messages when I start or stop services (httpd, ssh, etc.). My /etc/syslog.conf is the installation default: # Log all kernel messages to the console. # Logging much else clutters up the screen. #kern.* /dev/console # Log anything (except mail) of level info or higher. # Don't log private authentication messages! *.info;mail.none;authpriv.none;cron.none /var/log/messages # The authpriv file has restricted access. authpriv.* /var/log/secure # Log all the mail messages in one place. mail.* -/var/log/maillog # Log cron stuff cron.* /var/log/cron # Everybody gets emergency messages *.emerg * # Save news errors of level crit and higher in a special file. uucp,news.crit /var/log/spooler # Save boot messages also to boot.log local7.* /var/log/boot.log Any Ideas? Trying to understand Remote desktops

This is something that has been long overdue for me to set up, and how I am looking it hard in the face. Back in '94, I was doing REAL X-Terminals into UNIX systems. Watching simple mouse meanderings eat up all available bandwidth, and forget it if you resized a window and had to download the new font..... So here we are, in the modern times with GNOME (I chose that over KDE, because), and Open Office, Thunderbird, and lots of other nice graphical apps. I want to run the apps on an app server and access them for a thin client. I am familiar with the K12TLSP project, but right now I want to see what I can do myself. What is the minimum X install for the server to run Open Office with the only graphical usage the remote client? I well learned back in '91 when I started with TCP/IP, the TCP Client/Server model and how X-Windows and SNMP ran 'backwards'. That is your device was the Server and the device with the data/app was the client. So in theory, all I would need to have on the Centos Apps server is the X and Gnome client parts and some remote server (like XRDP)? I have the test box sitting here, ready to run an install.... I think it would be so cool, to see my Gnome desktop from the apps server running on my little old Libretto running DSL.
