Newbie: how to install from Windows?

Hello! I just joined this mailing list a couple of minutes ago. I'll start to use CentOS for academic purposes. We'll try to build a cluster based in machines with this OS. First of all, I'd like to beg you for patience, because I'm comple- tly new in Linux. My first question is: every tutorial on installation talks about inserting an installation CD, but I'm not sure about what do it means... I've downloaded the four files .iso availabe in CentOS.org, but I don't know what to do with them. Should I burn this files into de CD the way they are? Should I unzip them before this? Details: I'm using Windows, trying to install CentOS 4 in a 32 bit's PC. I've downloaded CentOS-4.5-i386-bin.......iso. Thank you for any help! ~ J. That sounds nice! This TIPS, CONFIG_HZ=100, is one of FAQs. It will make most of us happy. Now we can get kernel-vm package on dev.centos.org. Is it a test release of the special kernel? I installed the kernel-vm. Its change-log shows HZ=100. And the kernel seems better for clock interval on VMWare. Thanks a lot. Yuji

Unable to boot xen dom0 on IBM System x3250

I have an IBM System x 3250 that successfully boots using the standard kernel (2.6.18-8.1.10.el5) but fails to boot with the xen kernel. The kernel appears to fail when it attempts to initialize the driver for the onboard SAS controller (LSI Logic / Symbios Logic SAS1064E PCI-Express Fusion-MPT SAS). Can anyone provide any advice? Here's the relevant info. Please let me know if any other information would be helpful. too many links error when creating directories

hi , our centos os has an ext3 file system. and i cant create any more directories, it gives me a too many links error, even when doing a manual mkdir. is there any workaround for this? without changing it to a different file system like reiserFS? we dont have a reiserfs module in the os so it will have to be installed. and can it be possible to install a reiserFS without having to reformat the os? just mount it after installing? please advise

hostname not being picked up by DHCP

Hi - I am using the CentOS v5 desktop installation and am setting up a new lab for our engineering department. Initially I computers got their IP addresses and computer names from the DHCP process and the computer were getting the info from the dynamic pool. These name would be d-23-76.mnsu.edu, where the d stood for dynamic and 23-76 refered the IP address of xx.xx.23.76. The computer hostname would show up as d-23-76. I did not want the computers to get different IP address so I put the computers onto our DHCP table as manual DHCP clients by assigning a name and mac address to an IP address. Now the computers get the correct IP address but the hostname is localhost. Hi, Please respond privately as this is o.t. I'm looking for individuals experienced in plesk management. I'm getting an error running plesk 8.2, it was working before an upgrade. Logging in to plesk individual clients are able to be backed up, but when atempting to back up an entire domain an error about agent-runner not being able to establish a connection is given, connection refused. I've restarted the psa service and confirmed it is running. Thanks. Dave.

glibc errors related to nss_ldap or pam_ldap?

I am trying to track down the cause of some errors that have been occurring on a number of our servers using LDAP. We have noticed that when a certain LDAP group exceeds 65 users we begin seeing glibc errors for users in the group. Users that are not in the group do not exhibit this behavior. We have seen this issue on machines running Centos 4.5 x86 & x86_64 with glibc-2.3.4-2.36 and RH4 x86_64 running glibc-2.3.4-2.25. We are running Fedora Directory Server 1.0.4 on Centos 4.5. We have added a 3rd FDS slave and turned up debugging but have not seen anything that appears to be relevant in the logs on the 3rd slave. This problem is not a 65 user limit as we have other groups with well over 65 members that do not display this behavior. CentOS-5 - Suffering from LDAP experimentation

I was playing aeound with the GUI authentication configuration and was called away from my desk after I had configured the LDAP DC entries but before I had tried to start the ldap server or do much of anything else. When I returned the terminal session was screen-saver locked and entering my user password did not make it respond. I kept getting a time-out error. Rebooting took forever and was delayed for long periods at two points that I do not recall as being problems before; Loading IPtablesv6? and Starting system message bus. More importantly the user GUI takes forever to start. I am seeing these entries in the /var/log/merssages filr (vis ssh login through another system.): Sep 27 15:37:13 inet02 perl: nss_ldap: failed to bind to LDAP server ldap://127.0.0.1: Can't contact LDAP server Sep 27 15:37:13 inet02 perl: nss_ldap: reconnecting to LDAP server (sleeping 8 seconds)... Sep 27 15:43:26 inet02 gdm[3483]: nss_ldap: failed to bind to LDAP server ldap://127.0.0.1: Can't contact LDAP server Sep 27 15:43:26 inet02 gdm[3483]: nss_ldap: could not search LDAP server - Server is unavailable So, how do I undo whateever it is I borked when I experimented with LDAP?
