Waking up X

I just finished installing CentOS 5 (again)... and I'm having trouble with my X config (I _think_). If I 'startx' then switch to a console (using CTRL+ALT+F*) and then back to X (CTRL+ALT+F7), 1/2 the time it comes back, the other half I get a black screen and I can never recover the session. X is still running (CTRL+ALT+Backspace kills it) but there seems to be some type of power saving or screensaver that kicks in and won't let the session restore... Any hints on where to look? The X logs don't _seem_ to show anything... - G.

Intrusion Detection Systems

Situation: We are providing hosting services. I've grown tired of the various kiddie scripts/dictionary attacks on various services. The latest has been against vsftpd, on systems that I can't easily control vs. putting strict limits on ssh. We simply have too many users entering from too many networks many with dynamic IP addresses. Enter.... thinking about LIDS or Log Based Intrusion Detection. I've run across four systems. Blockhosts, DenyHosts, fail2ban and OSSEC. DenyHosts apparently only works with ssh, so I've discounted using that. Is anyone using one of these or something else that I've missed. At present, I'm leaning towards OSSEC for several reasons. First it seems very robust. Second, you can set up a server/client structure, so only one machine acts as the server and all the others present data to it so that it can share with the entire system. The author seems to have considered some of the basic problems of log based systems and addressed those. There does seem to be flexibility among these three systems in having the ability to monitor just about any log system and take action based on failed logins for instance. So, whats the word from the list? Pros cons or other directions? Thanks, John Hinton

SOLUTION: How to use a custom icon for the Main Menu on the panel

After much head-scratching I finally figured out how to get a custom icon for the Main Menu on the panel. For the benefit of anyone else who wants a custom icon: yum install gconf-editor Run gconf-editor and go to apps - panel - objects The main menu is one of the "object_0", "object_1" items. Just go through them until you find the one that is the Main Menu. Put a checkmark in the "Use custom icon" box. Right-click on the "custom icon" entry (a few lines up from "use custom icon"), select "edit key" and enter the path to the icon you want to use. Central file server advice please

Hi List I have a Gygabyte GA-7N400 PRO2 with a 2.6 mHz Athlon cpu. I want to set up a central file storage for 2/3 users using 6/7 machines. A mixture of win2k, XP and various Linux distros (my home network). It will be used to store files, (docs, music and DVD ) for all of these machines, print server, (two ink-jets), mail server and later on a myth tv set up. Would SAMBA be the best option for the file and print serving ? The mother board has 2 X IDE channels, 2 X IDE channels with raid and 2 X SATA raid channels, that's up to 10 hard drive devices. The IDE raid chip is a GigaRaid IT8212F chipset. It supports raid 0 or raid 1 and raid 0 + 1 and JBOD. The SATA raid is a Silicon Image Sil3512. It supports Raid 0 or 1. Would I get better speed performance using the chips to manage the raid or using software raid? Oh and I will be using the CentOS 5 install dvd. Any advice from the list would be appreciated. CentOS 4.5 on SGI Altix

Hi All, I have been able to successfully CentOS 4.5 on a SGI Altix 450 with 8P and 12GB of RAM. When at the EFI prompt I had to boot with the following parameters elilo linux text console=ttySG0,38400n8 The installation is still going so I'll let you know if it boots after install

OpenSSH multiple private key question

I am using CentOS 4.5 with OpenSSH_3.9p1 and I am curious if anyone has a solution for this scenario. I have several pub/priv keys that I use for various tasks/reasons. My issue is that I want to have 2 private keys stored in ~/.ssh/ and I am not sure the best way to accomplish that. Currently I am using ssh-agent, and it works fine for manually performing tasks. I was curious if there is a simple way to have multiple private keys stored in the same ~/.ssh/ directory without using ssh-agent? Thanks for reading. -Von
