can't install rrdtool, problems with dependancies

Hi all, I have tried to install rrdtool manually, but have noticed that I need perl-rrdtool as well for it to work, and I have approached this the wrong way. So, instead of installing rpmforge first, I have downloaded the rrdtool from sourceforge and installed it the old-fashioned way, totally forgot about rpmforge. So, now I want to remove it, and install it via rpmforge in order to get perl-rrdtool installed as well. The steps I initially took was: yum install cairo-devel libxml2-devel pango-devel pango libpng-devel freetype freetype-devel libart_lgpl-devel # cd /opt/ # wget http://oss.oetiker.ch/rrdtool/pub/rrdtool-1.3.1.tar.gz # tar -zxvf rrdtool-1.3.1.tar.gz # export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/lib/pkgconfig/ # ./configure # make # make install # cd /usr/local/ # ln -s rrdtool-1.3.1/ rrdtool/ # cd rrdtool # ls -l I got the instructions here, http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/howto-install-rrdtool-on-rhel-linux/, which originally came from here: http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/howto-install-ntop-on-rhel-centos-fedora-linux/ BUT, now that I want to move on, I can't. difference in x86 64 bit centos between 4.x and 5.x versions

i am new to the x86 64 bit centos versions. ive always used the 32 bit version on industrial type HP hardware for those of you that are running x86 64 bit centos, other than specific hardware issues, are you finding that 5.x centos is better than 4.x centos for x86 64 bit processing? does it matter in the amd vrs intel hardware differences what you choose to use for centos version? other things to make note of? if i need to be more specific in the general-ness of the approach, please let me know. thanks in advance for feedback. - rh

hdc: no DRQ after issuing MULTWRITE

I have 3 OQOs with Centos and I frequently get the following error messages: Jan 28 13:18:07 oqo3 kernel: hdc: status timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy } Jan 28 13:18:07 oqo3 kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown Jan 28 13:18:07 oqo3 kernel: hdc: no DRQ after issuing MULTWRITE Jan 28 13:18:07 oqo3 kernel: ide1: reset: success I have Fedora 10 on a fourth unit and it NEVER gets this message. I should point out that originally I had Centos on this unit as well and it got these errors, so this seems to be something that Centos is having problems with that has been 'fixed' by FC10. Any idea what can be done? They seem to be more nuance that not, but if I am in init 3 mode and in VI and get one of these messages in the middle of editing some file, well, I typically :q! out and start over.....

getting Centos on "used" rackable systems 1U with dual Opteron 248 HE

Knoppix won't let me write to emergency drive

I appear to have lost the whole of my home directory on my centos server (which includes all my mail saved from the last 7 years). Although I have recent backups of most data I would like to copy important files from /etc, and, if possible, /var/logs so that I can try to find out what went wrong. However, knoppix refuses to let me write to either my usb hdd or usb pendrive. Does anyone know how to persuade it? Thanks Anne

More than 2TB RAID...

Hi, I just received a new server (HP DL180G5) with 12x 1TB HDs and I bumped into fdisks 2TB limits... Since this is an entry level server, I can't use the classic HP bootable utilities to create smaller volumes et can only create a big RAID6. I found out that: using parted, labelling it gpt and creating the partitions would do the trick. But, what about grub? I read that it does not support gpt... Or is there another way to do it? By example, do you think I could boot on a live CentOS, install HP RAID tools on it (is it possible?) and then create volumes...? Thx, JD

SELinux - null security context

I'm seeing this every hour when the hourly cron job runs NULL security context for user, but SELinux in permissive mode, continuing () I've tried fixfiles but obviously I'm missing something.... Any SELinux gurus that can point me in the right direction? Thanks Rob
