tar cvhf with link restore??

I am doing "tar" test due to some software require "tar cvhf". When I using "tar cvhf and tar xvhf ", files have symbolic link replace by physical files. wield things is my friend using same command 'tar cvhf and tar xvhf". after restore link still there. does there has way when I using "tar cvhf" and "tar xvhf" I can get link back not physical files? O.S. is CENTOS 5.4 and 5.5. Thanks.

I am trying to install git-1.7.1 from the rpmforge repository on my CentOS-5.5 CI box. I do not do Perl and I have no ide how to translate perl(packed-refs) into a package anme. Nor does 'yum provides */*packed-refs*' supply an answer. umask not functioning with cp command

Hi all, $ umask 0002 $ mkdir test $ ls -ld test drwxrwxr-x 2 user user 4096 Jun 23 19:04 test/ $ls -ld content drwxr-xr-x 2 user user 4096 Jun 23 19:29 content $ cp -r content test/ $ls -ld test/content drwxr-xr-x 2 user user 4096 Jun 23 19:29 content My question is, how can I make content directory permission mode to 775 if I do cp inside the test directory? 2 DVDs for CentOS 5.5

Just finished downloading the DVD with bittorrent. Ended up with two iso files (1 of 2 and 2 of 2). sha1sum checks out on both. This is the first time I've encountered two DVDs. Will the install politely ask for DVD #2 when it is time?

NFS exports network mask

Hi, I need to export NFS shares to all clients in a subnetwork, except that one client will have different NFS options. I am not sure how to write subnest mask for this in exports file. For all clients it was easy as all I had to do was 10.0.0.0/16 or 10.0.0.0/255.255.0.0. How do I modify exports file to have special rule/entry for this particular IP? Any pointers on how to do this? -- Thanks, CS

New kernel causes hardware error?

I have recently upgraded to 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5 and within several days the machine crashed with the following error (repeating in mcelog): MCE 0 HARDWARE ERROR. This is *NOT* a software problem! Since this appears to be a memory error, I have run memtest86+ many times. However it does not report any errors. Reverting back other Kernels (below) and testing, this above error would be generated only once (after boot) and then not be reported again and definitely wasn't causing kernel panic and crashing the machine. CentOS-5.4 (2.6.18-164.15.1.el5) CentOS (2.6.18-164.9.1.el5) CentOS (2.6.18-164.el5) Would this error indicate a motherboard or CPU problem? How can I diagnose? or is there something funny with the Kernel? Hardware: Supermicro X8DTL-iF motherboard. Intel Server Xeon E5502 1.86GHz Nehalem 8GB Ram Kingston DDR3-1333 w/ Parity w/ Thermal Sensor I have read on bugzilla note about mcelog and not supporting nehalem processor during error decoding. XFS on CentOS

Hi all, Does anybody know why unlike so many Linux distros (Fedora, Ubuntu, OpenSUSE) CentOS does not come with XFS support by default but rather requires custom modifications after the install in order for you to be able to support XFS on your CentOS machine? Just seems a little odd given how much CentOS is oriented to be used as a server OS. Thanks. Boris.

OT: Recommendation for a good Internationalized terminal software

Hi all, We've got server-based application that runs on CentOS. Until now, most of our customer's end-users have accessed the application using either PuTTY or Teraterm. I was asked yesterday to try and find internationalized add ons or alternatives for our new Asian customers (Japan, Korea and China atm). I figured if anyone would be able to recommend terminal emulation programs, it'd be you guys. So, would anyone be able to recommend any windows-based, Asian character set telnet/ssh terminal apps? Migrating away from Nagios

I'd try Zenoss. I wrote a big paper comparing Nagios, OpenNMS and Zenoss ( http://www.skills-1st.co.uk/papers/jane/open_source_mgmt_options.html ) - it's nearly 2 years back now but many of the basics are the same. At that time, I plumped for Zenoss but, to be fair, my main negative on OpenNMS was that it is written in Java - it did pretty-well everything I needed. On the Zenoss front, my main winges were the quality and reliability of the documentation and the code. Zenoss has done a HUGE amount of work on code reliability since then and the documentation is coming along. It runs Nagios plugins if you need that, and will use SNMP, WMI and ssh as protocols to talk to a device. The community is very active and, although Zenoss also have a commercial offering (Enterprise) as well as the free Core, we still seem to get very good air-time from the developers to help resolve issues and to take input from the community.
