centos syslog?

Dear All I have installed 3CDaemon on my MS Windows client as syslog message reception point. I need to configure my centos to send him syslog messages. Can you please let me know how it can be accomplished? Thank you

Using a composite device under Centos 4.8 - no mouse clicks

I recently got an EEEbox. This is an Atom based nettop. It came with a wireless keyboard/mouse which talk to a 2.4Ghz USB adapter (a Chicony device as it turns out). Now if I plug this adapter into a Centos 4.8 machine both the keyboard and mouse are detected... but mouse clicks aren't. I can move the mouse, the scroll wheel works, but buttons 1/2/3 aren't detected. Neither in X nor in console gpm. It worked fine in Ubuntu 10.04, and obviously works fine with Windows XP. My feeling is that maybe perhaps the older 4.8 kernel doesn't have a sufficiently good driver so I might be forced to compile my own (*sigh*) but I was wondering if anyone else had come across a similar issue and had a work around? -- rgds Stephen

Physical-to-Virtual (VMware) & SELinux

Hello guys, I have a couple of servers that I'm about to virtualize to our VMware Vsphere ecosystem. For Linux servers I read that one needs to use the stand-alone converter (which is a live-cd that you boot from it and then you point it to your destination ESX). I would like to know from folks that have already done so...what was your experience like? Did everything went smooth? Any caveats? I'm worried about the filesystem extended attributes (SELinux). Will it survive the migration? Or will I need to relabel the whole filesystem again? Thanks, Jorge

Yum problem on Centos 5.3 (64-bit)

Hello, I'm having a yum problem updating a system on Centos 5.3, 64-bit ... i.e. 'yum update' returns "No Packages Marked for Update". Problem appears to be related to connecting to the mirrors where the repositories are located but I could be wrong in that. What's confusing me is that I have another system (Centos 5.5, 32-bit) that's working fine. Disabling services in CentOS 5.5

Hello all, I have been doing some searching for information about disabling services within a CentOS 5.5 install. I have found a few different opinions, and wanted to ask for some feedback. First off, the system is running a LAMP stack to serve a web application. It will only be doing email to send occasional messages out (sent via the application only). It will not be receiving email for any users. It is an CentOS 5.5 (fully updated) install running under VMware (esx, I believe). We are not sharing directories via nfs or samba (either from or to this virtual machine). >From my research, the services that I am thinking of turning off are: nfs (already off) nfslock portmap rpccgssd rpcidmapd rpcsvcgssd apcid apmd mdmpd mdmonitor Is there any reason that I need to leave any of these services running? Are there others that I should disable as well? cameras and CentOS

Hi I want to put up a few cameras connected to a CentOS box. I currently have a box with one camera and that works (USB), I can take a pic (the script does that) and see that on a webpage. However, I want to have a couple of cameras a little further away (more than 5 meters). USB has a limit, I have tried that camera with a longer cable and it does not work ... so I need to route that in a different way. Are there equaly as cheap other moethods? Or can I use USB<-adapter->network cable<-adapter->USB? How can I get that to work? Jobst -- Student to Teacher: Sir, what's an oxymoron? .... Cacti/snmp question

Hi, Trying to follow the recipe at http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Cacti_on_CentOS_4.x Which has a bit of an update for 5.x, but no joy. Anyone know what this from Cacti should suggest? My whole goal here is to get something working to graph CPU core use on a handful of systems. Or is there a better tool than Cacti (or better documented - hopefully in the form of simple recipe rather than many haphazard - often out-of-date - pages of RTFM)? Cacti admits to serious security flaws, not that this'll go on the public net, but I'd be happier to run something safer nontheless. Thanks, Whit

Upgrade

I am currently running CentOS 4.5 (which, through many Yum updates) now appears to be CentOD 4.8. 4.8 is still rather old, but I havbe lots of stuff (files and stuff installed). I would like to install Fedora but I am worried about losing all the stuff I have. I would have to back everything up, uninstall/reinstall things, etc. I am wondering whether there is some way to upgrade to Fedora from CentOS without just having to reinstall everything? - Done.

amazon ec2 and centos?

Searching through the archives, it seems this topic has come up several times in the past 2.5 years. Did anyone ever take on the tasks of creating an official CentOS AMI? We're currently using the RightScale ones, but I think it'd be ideal to have a clean CentOS AMI with the current kernels. Karanbir, you seem to have been the one on CentOS side who has had the most conversations with Amazon. Is that conversation dead? If we had a small committee with members from this list, would that help in any way? Ranging from doing the bundling work, to utilizing our account reps within Amazon to help us push this along? johnny

Lessee, first I tried rpmbuild, and that failed, because it *required* xen-devel. So I grabbed the tarfile from /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES, unbzip2'd it, untar'd it, and did a make. And ten or so later, I had 265 kernel modules. I don't want or need to install all of that, so I tried just building gspca, and that failed with unresolved errors. Does anyone know if I can just install gspca*.ko, or even some subgroup of that, or is it dependent on other of the built modules? Two other notes: on an FC 13 box, I see that gspca literally comes with the kernel - does anyone have a clue whether part of that subsystem is available, or is that what I'm looking at, above? Finally, in googling, I found a UVC that's supposed to deal with most USB cameras. Does anyone know anything about it, or will I still need gspca? mark
