Hardware RAID 10 server - reformat NTFS partition to ext3 and resize for Centos 5.5

Here's the situation. I have a dual boot machine - originally had Red Hat and Windows 2000 Pro. The NTFS partition never did seem to 'get along' with the Adaptec 2400A caching RAID controller. Linux always seemed to like the I2O drivers. I went from RH Enterprise to now running Centos 5.5. Works great! I really don't want the 200 gigs worth of NTFS. Can't I just run GParted from a CD, reformat the NTFS and append the space to the existing Linux partition? What will I have to do with LVM to see the expanded partion? - anything special? I've never done this before - is it really much more complicated than I've outlined here? Please advise this old simpleton. Many thanks in advance. Ed Westphal

Samba share configuration: r/w for some users, read-only for others

Hi, I'm using Samba for some basic setups like open shares for everybody, or restricted shares with Samba users and passwords. So far, everything works fine. I have two situations which both more or less amount to the same, and I don't know how to configure it. One is in a school, the other one in a town hall. 1) In the school, I'd like to configure a share that is readable and writable for all the teachers, and read-only for the students. The idea is that the teachers can write some assignments or various papers and then put them in the share so the students can access them (without modifying them). 2) Similar setup in the town hall. The mayor wants to have a share where he and his secretary can fully access the documents, write them and modify them, and the library users can then access them read-only. Is this feasible with Samba? And if so, what would the according smb.conf look like? Cheers from the sunny South of France, Niki

versioning file system for Linux

Hi all, I would be nice if we could find a reliable versioning file system to use as an underlying revision control mechanism. Going by this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Versioning_file_system there aren't all that many options but I am still hopeful. We would most likely be hosting it on a CentOS machine. If you have a perspective on this please share it. Thanks. Boris.

Bug in cfdisk?

Hi, I'm currently working through Sander Van Vugt's "Beginning the Linux Command Line" (Apress), just for fun. Right now I'm just trying out all the examples in chapter 5, dedicated to managing partitions and logical volumes. After some work with fdisk (which I normally use), the book introduces cfdisk (which I've been using in Slackware days). Curiously enough, CentOS' cfdisk doesn't seem to work. I'm experimenting with two USB sticks connected to an old NEC Powermate, which appear as /dev/sda resp. /dev/sdb. I can access them with fdisk OK and partition them any way I want. Except I can't seem to open them with cfdisk. When I try it, I get the following error message : ************************************** FATAL ERROR: Cannot seek disk on drive Press any key to exit cfdisk ************************************** Now I don't really mind about that error, since fdisk does anything I need. But I'm just wondering about why that happens. Any idea? Niki

problem rebuilding kvm package on centos 5.5

HOWTO - Install HP PSP On CentOS 5

As I was working today I kept notes on my adventures in installing the HP Proliant Support Pack software on my server running CentOS 5.5. It's a rough guide but I have posted it up in the HP Support forums in the hopes that it will help others who take on this task. http://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=14364… I have also submitted a request to add a wiki page on the CentOS wiki so I can post the guide and work on cleaning it up. Upgrading from 4.4 to 4.7

Hello all, For (system) certification purposes, we have to upgrade our 4.4 machines to 4.7. In the past I usually have just reinstalled machines to save the (perceived) headaches of upgrading. That is not an option in this case. Are there any pitfalls to watch out for when upgrading? Is it even possible to go up 3 revisions? NFS performance - default rsize

Hi list, We've had an interesting NFS performance issue with the following setup. Clients : CentOS 5.5, kernel 2.6.18-194.el5 Server : Solaris 10 kernel Generic_142901-08 Reading a file (not cached) with dd : dd if=file1 of=/dev/null bs=1024k count=100 performance is around.. 700 kB/s ! /proc/mounts shows rsize has been negotiated to 1mB If we force rsize to a smaller value, 32kB, the problem goes away and we're back around 70/80 mB/s read performance. Wiresharks show something interesting in the first (slow) case: It seems that the NFS client is "waiting" between requests: 1473 11.756852 client.net nfs1.net TCP 868 > nfs [ACK] Seq=9345 1474 11.757888 nfs1.net client.net RPC Continuation 1475 11.797837 client.net nfs1.net TCP 868 > nfs [ACK] Seq=9345 1476 11.798877 nfs1.net client.net RPC Continuation [....] Notice how the server replies within about 0,001s, but the client appears to be waiting 0,04s before asking for the next bit. (we captured the traffic from the client). This pattern repeats for the whole exchange It's likely we missed something, can't figure it out.. has anyone seen this before ? Cheers, Alex

How to specify the default route?

I have a machine with two net interfaces. it seems to always pick the wrong one (eth1) as the default route. I can change it with route del default route add default eth0 after it's up (or in rc.local, of course), but I'd like to figure out what I need to do this "the CentOS way" (e.g. edit some configuration file? Run some config utility, what?) once and for all. Can somebody point me to the canonical documentation on the subject? I've searched /usr/share/doc and the man pages, but I can't find anything useful. Googling for "default route centos" gives some interesting stuff, but nothing definitive. Thanks! Rick
