How does Linux Repair actually work

Thanks to the help of folks on this forum, I now have my Centos 4 box up and working, however I do have a question on how the repair actually worked. After starting the Linux Repair, the process "found my installed Linux". Some of you will remember that I had accidentally erased the /boot and /boot/grub directories, but I had most of the files saved (not the symbolic links) and put them back into the directories *and* I did run a rpm reinstall. When Linux Repair "found the installed Linux", did it create a new /boot and /boot/grub *or* did it just use what I had put there? Managing users and passwords

I plan to make my current Centos 4 HD a slave and install Centos 5.5 on a new HD (master). Then comes the challenge of of moving all of my /home/"user" data to the new master. I have some preliminary questions: Is this a good strategy for installing Centos 5.5: keep the Centos 4 on a slave disk? Will the Centos 5.5 detect the slave disk (Centos 4)? Is there a way to move the users, groups and passwords from one disk to the new Centos 5.5? Hi All, This is regarding the Centos 5.5. Now I want to install Amber Molecular dynamics software. But it requires few pre-requisite of gfortran compiler. Can any one tell me from where I can get the same for centos 5.5. Hirdesh

Hi, this is the first time I install linux on a dell server. Simply I booted from a centos 5.5 x64 dvd but I cant see the disks.. is there something I miss ? thanks very much for any help luigi

OT LVM question

I've got a situation here where my LVM is showing the following problem: Found duplicate PV xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx: using /dev/sdb2 not /dev/sda2 Not sure what causes this and I really don't have a clue as to what the consequences are when seeing this or how to fix it. Google just confuses me with any suggestions. Can anyone offer any help, please? Steve Campbell

Installing IMA (Integrity Measurement Architecture) on CentOS 5.5

I'm trying to install IMA (http://linux-ima.sourceforge.net/) on CentOS 5.5, but the shipped kernel does not support it. One solution is to install a 2.6.30 kernel, but I don't really like this idea. Does anybody has tried to install it? Regards, Andreas

CUPS drivers for wide printer

I found the .ppd for our brand new HP z3200ps 44" printer - a coworker got me the one from the Mac, and I edited it to separate out the Mac-only commands (there's even an #ifdef in ppd language), and it prints; I don't even need postprocessing, apparently... except that even though it knows how wide the paper is (in this case, a 24" wide roll that came with the printer), it refuses to print a picture that's horizontally wide horizontally, it insists on doing it vertically. That is ========= saturn ========= according to print preview, wants to print || || || saturn || || || Anyone here worked with a wide-format printer, and/or have a suggestion as to what I need - is it something in the .ppd, or do I need a post-processor, or...? Changing daylight saving time for Turkey.

Hi, Normally daylight date change last sunday march for Turkey but this year daylight saving time will change for Turkey at 28 March 2011 at 03.00 AM so how can i change daylight save time setting for this year on CentOS servers ? Hello everyone: * DNS does not have a "refresh rate". In DNS, the person running the domain determines what the "refresh rate" (it's called TTL in DNS) for their records is; for example, Google has a TTL of "once per hour" and my domains (maradns.org, etc.) have a TTL of one day. * As mentioned before, Scientific Linux 6.0 is out. What hasn't been mentioned here is that while SL 5.6 hasn't come out, 5.6 security updates are being backported to SL 5.5. Ditto with SL 4 (no 4.9 but security patches look current) Take care everyone, - Sam
