ext4, 4k sector alignment

I've mentioned this problem before but put off doing anything about it and maybe now someone can suggest the best solution. I have a 3-member RAID1 set where one of the members is periodically swapped and rotated offsite. The filesystem contains a backuppc archive which has millions of hardlinks that make it impractical to copy with a file-oriented approach. The current filesystem is ext3 with one partition that uses the entire disk capacity (no lvm). It works as is, but... I'd like to use a laptop size drive for the swapped member and the only ones available that match the size have 4k sectors. I have swappable, trayless SATA bays available for both drive sizes. The problem is that with the current partition layout, the drive with 4k sectors takes more than a day to re-sync even though on read access the speed is a match for the full sized drives that sync in a few hours. My questions for any filesystem experts are: Is there a way to adjust the existing md partitions to get the right alignment for 4k sectors without having to do a file-oriented copy to new partitions? A resize + a dd copy to shift the position might be feasible time-wise if that would work. Is it worth converting to ext4? Is there a difference between doing this on 5.6 or 6.x? If I start over from scratch with 6.x, will the partitioning tools automatically align for 4k sector drives (with/without lvm?)? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

How to open several tabs in a gnome-terminal window and run a command in each tab?

"gnome-terminal --tab-with-profile=AAA --tab-with-profile=BBB" Hi I am trying to open several tabs in a gnome-terminal window like above. I want to run a command for each tab within the body of the above command. AAA and BBB are both profiles I have created and also predefined environment variable on my system (each representing a path to a folder). The code I was hoping would work was something like: "gnome-terminal --tab-with-profile=AAA -e='ls AAA' --tab-with-profile=BBB -e='ls BBB'" in order to list the folder contents within each tab, but no dice. Anyone know how to do this in a single command? Thanks Pete

grabbing ip address from kickstart pre

I can get the kickstart command line with /proc/cmdline it looks something like xxxxx ks=http://192.168.1.8/ks/ks.cfg xxxxxx in the %pre sections of my ks.cfg I was wanting to extract the IP from the ks= part. I was going to utilize the "tr" command but its not available in %pre. how can I go about extracting the IP address from with in the %pre section I was going to do something like: cat /proc/cmdline | tr ' ' '\n' | grep ks=http | tr '/' ' ' | awk {' print $2'} Since tr isnt available how else can I do it? java permission denied

Hey guys, I just tried installing jdk 1.0.7 on my centos 5.6 box and I am getting a permission denied error when I try to display the java version. [root@VIRTCENT09:/usr/lib] #ln -s /usr/lib/jdk1.7.0 /etc/alternatives/jdk [root@VIRTCENT09:/usr/lib] #ln -s /usr/lib/jdk1.7.0/bin/java /etc/alternatives/java [root@VIRTCENT09:/usr/lib] #ln -s /etc/alternatives/java /usr/bin/java [root@VIRTCENT09:/usr/lib] #java -version Error: dl failure on line 875 Error: failed /usr/lib/jdk1.7.0/jre/lib/i386/client/libjvm.so, because /usr/lib/jdk1.7.0/jre/lib/i386/client/libjvm.so: cannot restore segment prot after reloc: Permission denied I tried opening up the permissions every step of the way along the path to /usr/lib/jdk1.7.0/jre/lib/i386/client/libjvm.so but no luck so far. I would certainly appreciate any advice you'd be willing to provide! thanks!! tim

dovecot problem -- not deleting messages from server after downloading them

I recently installed CentOS 6.0 and Dovecot 2.0. My problem is that, when I download emails to my laptop (running Thunderbird), the emails are NOT deleted from my server. They stay there and are downloaded again and again. 8-( The "Leave messages on server" option in Thunderbird is not checked. I have several laptops that used to work when I ran CentOS 5.6 / Dovecot 1.x. I haven't changed their configuration and they all have the same problem. Wireless Problem - no longer able to connect

Hi all, When I first loaded C6 on my Dell Inspiron laptop the wireless worked flawlessly right out of the box. At the time the wireless access point was a Linksys WAP54G using WPA-2 Personal. In the last two weeks that Access point has been replaced with a Linksys WAP610N, also using WPA-2 Peronal. The problem I'm having is the wireless adapter sees the new WAP just fine, but is unable to connect.
