Desktop for newbies

Folks I'm about to set up a non-root user on a Centos=7 server that I control for a friend. It is in his home, so access is local. He's a refugee from the latest Windows 10 Upgrade. I'd like a suggestion as to which of the several possible graphical desktops to suggest to him and set up for him as his default. My aim is: - Allow him to try out Linux as an end-user - Let him start to feel comfortable with the desktop - Learn the new idioms for familiar programs and functions And later - Give him his own system with root privileges. Hey All, I'm considering moving from CentOS 6 to CentOS 7. I'm not interested in dealing with Gnome 3. I've heard good things about Mate, a fork of Gnome 2. it appears that Mate is available in the EPEL repository associated with CentOS 7. Have any of you tried Mate on CentOS 7? Virtualization Networking

Hello, I'm a little confused on which networking option I need to choose when setting up a VM. I set up two VMs this past weekend both with NAT. Both able to were access the internet. The first one, I created in my / file system but didn't really have the space so I deleted it. The second one, I created in /home/kvm, but deleted it as well when I couldn't access it FROM the internet. I had a full backup scheduled for that night and deleted it as well. I have one of those free domains/DNS from no-ip.com, centos7vm.ddns.net I plan to use as the host name. I want to be able to access this VM from the internet. So, how much in the network setup for the new installation do I need to do? Do I need to go with NAT or bridged? I did four installations last night and could get any of the access the internet with ym. Must have been dumb luck the first two times. I think it maybe something in iptables from one of the previous installs causing the problem. In ifconfig, I still have virbr0 and virbr1. Didn't have those before. CentOS on new Thinkpads

Is anyone running CentOS on a newish Thinkpad? I have been using Linux as my primary workstation since about 97 and it seems like using Linux as a desktop has slipped over the years. After the Gnome desktop dumb-down, I have been nursing CentOS 6.8 on a 5 yo Toshiba. So I was hoping that someone has some recent real-world experience with new Thinkpads. So is anyone running a new Thinkpad? What model? Any problems with wireless or suspend or the touchpad? It seems optical drives are gone. Do I boot the iso from USB or what's the procedure now? Generally seeking new laptop advice. If Lenovo is not good is anyone using Toshiba? Mike

I've had success on "older" model Lenovos.....(T-410 / T-420 / T-430) but anything beyond those seems to have some issue or another. I was even able to swap the standard drive to an SD (250GB) on a T-430 and it's running g like a champ. A lot of the newer stuff is OK as long as you don't have any boutique drivers for video network or sound. YMMV. The host acts as an internal router for machines and devices on the LAN. if its on a LAN with private addressing, you want to use a dedicated LAN IP address, seperate from the host's LAN IP, but since its behinda NAT router, I really don't know how you'd expect it to use DDNS as that will only see the router's internet IP address. ---------------------------------------- This is what I was seeing. Either it lands on the DSL router's login page or the host's website. I guess this is why I'm confused. Centos 7.2.1511 with sendmail and a problem with clamav

Everyone, I am putting together a new CentOS 7 mail server for our organization and am having some difficulty getting clamav to work with the clamav- milter for sendmail. HTTPS certificates (off topic)

How do I get a valid certificate for a box that is behind a firewall and does not have a DNS entry? I was looking at letsencrypt.org but currently it looks like a valid DNS entry is needed, of which I don't have. There is nothing special about my setup, its just a box that is not directly on the internet, no DNS entry but I need HTTPS to run correctly. How do I generate a trusted certificate base on IP or something? How can I do that? Thanks, Jerry
