Upgrading CentOS 5.2 to use gcc 4.x

I have a CentOS 5.2 installation with gcc 3.4.6 as the default. I'd like to upgrade the entire gcc tool chain, including libraries, to 4.x in order to build some software that requires 4.1.0 or better. Can I do this easily through yum? If I upgrade to 5.3 will I get gcc 4.x by default? Thanks, Patrick

we have following setup on sysctl.conf: kernel.sem = 256 32000 128 142 I tried to startup database and have error happen. I knew problem come from SEMMNS (32000) is not enough. Does anyone know how to calculate how many semaphores already use on system? Limit RAM used by a perl script

I have a perl script which runs from a cron job. How would you limit the amount of RAM that this script is allowed to consume? Is there a ulimit setting that will accomplish this? If so does ulimit have to be run each time the script is run, or is there a way to set it permanently?

script to monitor interface errors

Has anyone knocked up a script to monitor for interface errors before? i know i can look at the interface statistics with ethtool -S but i wonder if anything has something that looks at the last value for this statistic and then can alert if they increase? any thought how to solve this? it has to be host based and cant be on the switch thanks

Cant install CentOS 5.0 to a HP Proliant ML350 G3

Hi, I have been trying to install CentOS 5.1, 5.2,and 5.3 and the HP server but to no success. It starts loading well the on trying to load the cciss driver, the machine hangs there and refuses to move on. Any help will help quite alot. Thanks

Using ramdisks on CentOS

I'm running the 2.6 xen kernel on CentOS 5.3. My goal is to use larger-than-normal ramdisks. I can see that the rd module is statically compiled into this kernel, so I tried passing the option ramdisk_size=262144 during boot, but dmesg shows that it gets reset to 16384K. I can also see that this is the size stipulated in the kernel config. Do I have to rebuild the kernel to make this work? If that's the case, can I rebuild it with the new size and still use an initrd? If the answer is no, how do I go about making sure that the drivers I need are compiled into the kernel? I know the most basic steps to building a kernel, but I'm not entirely confident I know what I'm doing here. I've looked for howto's but haven't found anything covering this case yet. Any help is appreciated.
