TwinView (on NVIDIA graphics card)?

Hi, Is anyone here using TwinView with NVIDIA graphics drivers under CentOS 5? Just tried this configuration (I've been using dual monitors as separate X screens in the past), and while it works in a sense, there are a few issue that will probably prevent me from using it for real. Notably, which screen new applications start on (when using the Applications menu or panel launchers) seems to be quite arbitrary. I expect windows to open on whichever screen I initiated their creation, I suppose, but they will often appear on the other one. This is using the GNOME desktop. Another slight issue is with the notification icons. I really want to display duplicates of these, so I can view them on both screens, but is seems like the Notification Area doesn't work this way, i.e. it will never display more than one of each icon even when there are several instances of the area. But this is a problem I also have when using separate X screens. SSH without password on CentOS 5 ?

Hi, I'd like to use SSH without password so I can use it in scripts (for example in combination with rsync to do backups). I have Carla Schroder's "Linux Cookbook" and I'm trying out the various receipts, but the one for SSH without a password doesn't work. The book is slightly dated, and I wonder if SSH included in CentOS works differently. Any suggestions? Niki

CentOS on IBM Bladecenter HS21

Hello, I have CentOS 5.2 installed on two of the afore-mentioned blades. I've noticed that the OS started to crash lately (kernel panic) and I've been assigned the task to troubleshoot this issue. I would like to know what is the best way of recovering the kernel dump after the OS crashes. I know there are two software implementations that would enable me to do this, kexec and 'crash' , redhat's own implementation that allows you to pust the dump via network to a remote machine. What would be the best thing to do at this point? Regards, -Andrei F

Glibcxx_3.4.9 not found

Hi, I am running CentOS 5.3. 64 bit version. I have tried updating the OS but every time I run an application I need it reports that Glibcxx_3.4.9 is missing. I tried to do a search for this but cannot find it for my system. When CentOS upgraded to 5.3 I had hoped that the new Glibcxx would have been included but it is not. Is there an easy way to update the OS to include this? You can probably tell from the question that I am a Linux Newbie so please try to keep the answers simple. Many Thanks Chris

NUT problem

A little while ago I changed my UPS to Leibert and installed NUT. Everything worked as expected. Today I tried to use the MultiLink Viewer icon from the desktop, but it simply accepted the root password without apparently doing anything. I can run the viewer directly (as root) from a file manager. The icon is owned by me, but the application is set to run as root. I suspect that the problem is with 'kdesu'. The command 'kdesu /opt/MultiLink/bin/Viewer' which is what the icon runs, brings 'kdesu /opt/MultiLink/bin/Viewer' bash: kdesu /opt/MultiLink/bin/Viewer: No such file or directory From a root terminal, however, /opt/MultiLink/bin/Viewer /opt/MultiLink/jre/bin/java -cp .:/opt/MultiLink/lib/em.jar - Djava.compiler=NONE com.liebert.dpg.app.LxExecutor mainViewer /opt/MultiLink cfg/executor.cfg What changes do I need to make to be able to use the desktop icon again? Anaconda crashing on new machine

Hi! I'm building up a new computer and this evening have had several events during installation in which Anaconda has crashed. It's not clear that there is a lot of commonality between the different crashes. the first time I got all the way through package selection (selecting at the individual package level) before it crashed. the second time I made a mistake in partitioning and did BACK several screens to fix it, then when clicking NEXT several times to go forward to where I had been, it blew up. then it blew up while partitioning. then it blew up there again, though at a different place. I don't think there should be any problem with making /home 200 gigs,... doesn't ext3 have a limit something more like a terabyte or more? it's a gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 board with an AMD Phenom II X2 550 clocked at 3.1 Ghz, and 4 gigs of g.skill ram (which has run for several hours under memtest86+ with no problems.) Anyone got any helpful suggestions! BTW, I ran 3 different live-Cd distros on it today, for several hours, just looking for problems, and didn't find any, so I'm thinking the hardware is reasonably stable. (one always wonders, when it's all brand-new.) Upgrade 4.7 > 5.3 poorer 'performance'

Hi During a test upgrade of a number of hosts in a pool i have found that exactly the same JVM based app runs more efficiently on the 4.7 systems than it does on the 5.3 on identical hardware. Specifically the apps seems to exhibit about 10% more 'load' on the CPU's for the same workload - before i start digging deep has anyone seen anything similar ? thanks

CentOS, laptop & DLP

I have an old Toshiba Tecra 8100 that I run CentOS on - it's running 5.3 although not completely up to date at the moment. About a year ago, a club I help administer bought a BenQ DLP so we could show movies and do other projector things more easily than lugging around a 27" TV set. It worked just fine, but the behavior of the system with it has changed over the year and I'm curious if anyone might know why. When I first connected the DLP, the laptop (and CentOS) recognized it immediately, and there was absolutely no trouble with it at all. I plugged it in, turned it on, hooked it up, and voila, it worked. Now the laptop doesn't recognize the DLP unless I plug it in either before booting, or reboot after it's plugged in, and I can't play with the <function>-F5 combination (that switches between LCD, DLP, LCD+DLP, no video) until I'm logged in unless I want to be stuck in whichever mode it lands in. I usually set it for both and wait until my login is complete, then I can flip between all the settings just fine. One of the things I really liked about CentOS with this DLP at first was that I did NOT need to reboot for the system to recognize and use the DLP, just like any other hot-plug add-on. I connect it via the external 15-pin video port, same as day 1. Am I missing something, like "be sure the projector is on (or off) when I connect it to the laptop? I think I've tried all possible combinations of this and it just doesn't function at all unless I (re)boot after the DLP is on and connected. The only change I know for certain that happened over this year is that I upgraded from 5.2 to 5.3, but I can't remember if this had anything to do with the change in behavior or not (I don't think so, but it's been over the course of a year...). Gallery2 under CentOS-5.3

I asked about 18 months ago if gallery2 was available in any of the CentOS repositories, and it seemed that at that time it was not. However, there was some talk of putting it in epel or epel-testing. But I looked just now, and did not find it there. I actually installed gallery2 on my server by following the instructions at <http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:Preinstaller>.
