NetworkManager under CentOS 4 *without* GNome...

I have been *manually* dealing with my wired and wireless network interfaces on my laptop. I have a pair of config files (in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/: ifcfg-eth0 (wired: Intel Corporation 82540EP Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Mobile)) and ifcfg-eth1 (wireless: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter), both with USERCTL=true (and ifcfg-eth0 also has ONBOOT=true). I have manually fiddled with the ESSID, etc. in ifcfg-eth1 when needed, but this is tiresome. I would like to use NetworkManager, since this sounds like it might be easier. I don't use the GNome desktop, so I probably won't be able to use the stock GNome applet (this would not be a problem normally since I would just write my own GUI thingy, but there seems to be a complete lack of documentation for the GNome applet! But I have the source code and will figure it out eventually.). I use FVWM as a window manager and don't use a "desktop manager" at all. I run CentOS 4.8 on my laptop (and no, I am in no hurry to upgrade to CentOS 5). I've started NetworkManager (as root) and started NetworkManagerInfo (both as myself and a 'dummy' user with a vanila GNome desktop), but NetworkManagerInfo complains that there are no network interfaces available. Where does NetworkManager/NetworkManagerInfo get information about available network interfaces? I know that *both* interfaces work just fine using the manual startup (eg ifup eth0 and ifup eth1). Is there a config file I need to mess with? If so, where is it? Weird performance problem

Hi, I'm running a CentOS 4. server and I sometimes face a weird problem. It is a weird performance problem, and here is how I discovered it. This server runs OpenVZ virtual machines, and one of them is an asterisk server for my personal use. The first symptom of the problem is that the voice quality became flaky. So I logged on the server to see what could be eating cpu cycles, when I ran top, it took almost one minute before top actually showed. Another hint is that when I run dstat (a monitoring utility that is a mix of iostat and vmstat and other stats), I often get a "missed xx ticks", where xx is a number. The only solution I've found up to now is to reboot... But hey, this isn't a Windows 98 machine :)! I tried restarting the VZ system, which restarts all the VMs, but it didn't solve the problem. I can't tell if the problem occurs on a stock centos kernel, because the server is running production (but non-critical) virtual machines, so it is always running the openVZ kernel. HP L7780 support in hplip 1.6.7???

Alle, I have an HP L7780 MFP, which is supported under hplip 1.7.2 but not the current install of 1.6.7. Does anyone know of a way just to add that particular driver to 1.6.7, or will it require removing the standard 1.6.7 and doing a custom install of 1.7.2. cd to folder with spaces - in a script

How can I cd into a dir, when it contains spaces, and I need to use it in a script? the directory: /home/user/this is a folder/something normally I would use: cd /home/user/this\ is\ a\ folder/something/ but in a script I cant just add the "\" like: find . -type d | while read FOLDER; do cd $FOLDER; done $ No such file or directory the problem is, that there would be more "special chars" then spaces, "sed" them all? :D Thank you

Gnome terminal oddity

I have the following gnome terminal profile settings: Backspace = ASCII DEL Delete Key = Escape Sequence If the logged in session in the terminal window is my own user id then the delete key does nothing. If however, I su -l in the same terminal window then the delete key removes the character under the cursor and left shifts the rest of the line. I am fairly confident that the delete key worked in the same fashion for my usual user id up until quite recently. ntfs-3g question

This is probably a dumb question, but I've looked around and I can't find anything on this. I'm using ntfs-3g now, from rpmforge, to access my M$ Window$ disks for offline backup and other such menial tasks, and I noticed that the ntfs file systems are not mounted automatically, but I have to mount them manually as ntfs-3g devices. I _thought_ when I installed the whole dkms-fuse and fuse-ntfs-3g packages from rpmforge that they would be more integrated into the system (i.e., direct automount). Is that just my erroneous expectation, or did I miss something in the installation process? Thanks. mhr PS: Still no resolution on the Canon problem. Canon suggested I use a card reader (which I mentioned having tried and failed in my question to them). LOVE that tech support for Linux....

Even with speedstep properly configured, you're going to burn a lot more power on any P4.Doing the same basic file and print services, the Atom boxes we built used around 35W average vs 140W on the P4 dual cores that they replaced. Only had one failure so far but we think that was user error - something seems to have blocked the fan because all other systems had lots of dust in it and the failed unit was perfectly clean.... Overall, the Atom boxes worked great for us. We didn't have a specific reason not to choose VIA, atom boards were just easier to find, at least when we were doing this. Can't help you with a specific model board though since we only needed a single lan port... I am not so sure that I would go for something with an Atom processor installed if it is going to be on 24/7 then I would rather if price has to be low, look at building a machine with a p4 dual core, they are really cheap and don't mind being on 24/7 after all Atom has half the processing speed as a pentium m processor.
