Gnome terminal oddity

I have the following gnome terminal profile settings: Backspace = ASCII DEL Delete Key = Escape Sequence If the logged in session in the terminal window is my own user id then the delete key does nothing. If however, I su -l in the same terminal window then the delete key removes the character under the cursor and left shifts the rest of the line. I am fairly confident that the delete key worked in the same fashion for my usual user id up until quite recently. Does anyone know of why or how this behaviour could differ between two separate users in the same terminal window? -- *** E-Mail is NOT a SECURE channel *** James B. ntfs-3g question

This is probably a dumb question, but I've looked around and I can't find anything on this. I'm using ntfs-3g now, from rpmforge, to access my M$ Window$ disks for offline backup and other such menial tasks, and I noticed that the ntfs file systems are not mounted automatically, but I have to mount them manually as ntfs-3g devices. I _thought_ when I installed the whole dkms-fuse and fuse-ntfs-3g packages from rpmforge that they would be more integrated into the system (i.e., direct automount). Is that just my erroneous expectation, or did I miss something in the installation process? Thanks. mhr PS: Still no resolution on the Canon problem. Canon suggested I use a card reader (which I mentioned having tried and failed in my question to them). LOVE that tech support for Linux....

Even with speedstep properly configured, you're going to burn a lot more power on any P4.Doing the same basic file and print services, the Atom boxes we built used around 35W average vs 140W on the P4 dual cores that they replaced. Only had one failure so far but we think that was user error - something seems to have blocked the fan because all other systems had lots of dust in it and the failed unit was perfectly clean.... Overall, the Atom boxes worked great for us. We didn't have a specific reason not to choose VIA, atom boards were just easier to find, at least when we were doing this. Can't help you with a specific model board though since we only needed a single lan port... I am not so sure that I would go for something with an Atom processor installed if it is going to be on 24/7 then I would rather if price has to be low, look at building a machine with a p4 dual core, they are really cheap and don't mind being on 24/7 after all Atom has half the processing speed as a pentium m processor. I know what's involved in releasing and announcing updates and such (done that enough!), so I'm not complaining, but I am curious. The last several of these I had to wait 6-8 hours or more before the updates were yum-able. Of course, it would be nice, from an end-user's perspective, if the updates were available by the time the announcement went out, and ISTR it used to be this way.... Anyway, to the CentOS team: great job of keeping us up-to-date, especially on security issues. This is just a nit, of mine, no worries.... Thanks! mhr

Samba Question

Hopefully very easy question to answer. I am trying to migrate data of of a samba server that is using winbind joined to a windows domain to another box. web filtering for remote computers

Hi, I am using Squid for local users since two years & is working fine. I am trying to implement web filtering for remote computers e.g few laptops & branch / franchise computers on dynamic ips. I do not want to use Squid proxy for it, if all remote computers will use Squid from my public ip, bandwidth utilization will increase. Need valuable suggestion to achieve this. USB issues

I am using centos5.3 x86_64 on a gigabyte GA-MA78GM-US2H motherboard. When I insert a USB thumbdrive its detected with dmesg, I mount it and start to copy files. Then I start getting errors: sdd: assuming drive cache: write through sdd: sdd1 sdd2 sd 7:0:0:0: Attached scsi removable disk sdd sd 7:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg4 type 0 usb-storage: device scan complete usb 1-5: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5 usb 1-5: device descriptor read/64, error -110 usb 1-5: device descriptor read/64, error -110 usb 1-5: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5 usb 1-5: device descriptor read/64, error -110 usb 1-5: device descriptor read/64, error -110 usb 1-5: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5 usb 1-5: device not accepting address 5, error -110 I have also tried connecting a USB hub into my computer and using that. Then plugging the thumbdrive into the hub. I get the same results. I have never had USB issues before - any ideas? Jerry
