Interesting faillog files.

Hi all CentOS users, I looked /var/log/messages log file and i realize something in "messages" files like below; --- Oct 24 04:02:42 cube2 kernel: Buffer I/O error on device sdc, logical block 1545 --- "sdc" is my storage and i switched off storage at 6 PM. and when i checked messages log file,I saw faillog under /var/log directory like below: -rw------- 1 root root 137438953440 Oct 24 15:39 faillog its ~136 GB but my disk table size like below: /dev/md1 497G 19G 453G 4% / /dev/md3 157G 15G 134G 10% /backup /dev/md0 243M 21M 210M 9% /boot tmpfs 32G 0 32G 0% /dev/shm /dev/sdc 805G 25G 739G 4% /mnt/sdc Where is ~136 GB faillog file ? ls and rm: "argument list too long"

Since when is there a limit in how long directory listings CentOS can show (ls), or how large directories can be removed (rm). It is really annoying to say, for example rm -rf /var/amavis/tmp and get only "argument list too long" as feedback. Is there a way to go round this problem? Simple audio recording app?

Hi, I'd like to get my microphone to work (mainly to use it with Skype). I've just been looking for a simple audio recording app, as I vaguely remember having seen such a thing before, only I can't seem to find it anymore. I'm using the default GNOME desktop with the latest CentOS 5. Any suggestions? Niki

rsync mirroring

Hello guys, we have a production server named prod-server we have a mirror server named storage-server . I want to mirror a downloadsite on production server to a mirror server , but i want to keep all files from production server on mirror server . More explicitly. If i will have a file named "myproduct.exe" on production server , which is allready mirrored on mirror server , and i will delete it on production server, i want to have an original file renamed to myproduct.exe_DATE_OF_DELETION and then new myproduct.exe normally mirrored as before. Basically - I want to backup all changes I am syncing using rsync -avz ......... Should i add --backup --suffix = $(date) and thats it? Thanks in advance! David

GIMP 2.4 packages for CentOS 5

Hi, One of my rare regrets with CentOS 5 was that GIMP only came in version 2.2, but 2.4 offers many nifty new functions quite handy for everyday work. For those of you who are interested, I built some GIMP 2.4 packages for CentOS 5. Help with a sun cobalt with sendmail and centos with postfix

Hi, I have a customer with a sun cobalt running Sendmail 8.10.2/8.10.2 and we are phasing out the sun cube due to some limitations. So we have installed a new centos 5.x server. the format of our current emails are username(a)domain.com and the new format will be name.lastname(a)domain.com. We have 1600 accounts. Both server are in the LAN. The MX record that the world sees, point to our current AV/AntiSpam appliance, then our AV appliance forwards to the mail server (its a trendmicro IMSS) The AV appliance lets me define rules that emails for username(a)domain.com should be sent to the mailserver with the cube, and it also let me define a rule for name.lastname(a)domain.com to be sent to the centos machine, so I have covered the "from internet" inbound email issue. going out to the internet, both servers can send emails perfectly. However, Since both servers will "answer" to the same domain, i need some guidance as to how to 1- If user hosted on the Sun sendmail Cube sends emails to name.lastname(a)domain.com, make the Cube forward/send the email to the Centos machine. 2- If user hosted in centos, sends email to username(a)domain.com, make the POSTFIX forward/send the email to the Cube machine. Due to internal regulations i must say that: 1- users cannot be moved all at once. 2- centos machine must use postfix - not sendmail. I can however, install sendmail on centos and make it listen in another port other than 25 if some solution arises that needs sendmail in both sides. Anyways, any guidance as to how to solve this mess is welcomed!!!! firefox is incredibly unstable

does anyone else have major probs with Firefox as installed on CentOS5? ever since the RPM for FF3 came out it has been crashing daily. Usually when I use Save As... or Browse... or anything else that brings up the Gnome file picker. After the crash I re-start then the file picker works for a while. Sometimes it just takes scrolling or click+drag an image or some other random action. BANG your'e dead. Very frustrating. Now today it is just crashing randomly, I am not even touching it. Maybe one of my plugins, I know. I guess I will run it with debugger/strace. but does anyone else see this? $ rpm -qa firefox firefox-3.0.2-3.el5.centos $ cat /etc/redhat-release CentOS release 5.2 (Final) $ rpm -qa kdebase kdebase-3.5.4-18.el5.centos
