Xvnc from tightvnc crashing

Hi all, I am having issues with running tightvnc-server on a CentOS 5.1 x86_64 machine (currently up-to-date, kernel 2.6.18-53.1.6.el5). Occasionally, the Xvnc instance will just crash, taking with it everything that I was running. When it crashes, it seems to do so when I try to open some GUI program. So, for instance, I click on a shortcut to open a program, and poof, it crashes. But it does not crash every time. At times it is usable for a long time. I believe tightvnc is available from rpmforge. $ rpm -qa | grep tightvnc tightvnc-server-1.3.9-1.el5.rf tightvnc-1.3.9-1.el5.rf Is anyone else using tightvnc? Is anyone having any trouble with it? Any ideas how to troubleshoot this? Disk partitions and LVM limits

Hi, I've got a DAS DELL MD1000 with a bunch of SATA drives in RAID 5 configuration with total space of 5.4TB. This box is attached to a CentOS5 system (kernel 2.6.18-53.1.6.el5). Any idea how to make this space usable? Is there a limit how big a partition can be? What is the work around? Is there a limit how big a file system ca be? I've tried to partition it but no matter how bug partition I create fdisk spits out these messages on the console: --- sdb: very big device. try to use READ CAPACITY(16). SCSI device sdb: 10248519680 512-byte hdwr sectors (5247242 MB) sdb: Write Protect is off --- I decided to not partition the drive and use LVM but the physical volume stopped at 2TB. So, right now I can't use LVM because of this 2TB limit and I'm not sure if I partition the drive how good these partitions are because of the the message from fdisk. Any help or idea is highly appreciated. Kernel compiling troubles (ABI checking)

Hi, I'm having a problem compiling the kernel as a normal user (don't know if not being root is the problem or not). What is ABI? I can compile with the flag --without kabichk, but I don't know if really is that the solution or not. nautilus quit

I have a client who emailed me earlier and said that his desktop is blank. The toolbar is present but all of his desktop shortcuts are gone and he has a black desktop. Reg. Kernel switching

Hi all, I am a newbie to linux and this is my first mail to this group. We have a PC running Centos version 2.6.9-42.0.2.EL. I needed to load a router software called Nistnet and it would not run properly. It is looking for RTC (Real Time clock) support as a module. I 've gone through the LKM Loadable Kernel module support under Documentation pages of Linux.org and did the following: located the kernel release: uname -r 2.6.9-42.0.2.EL next navigated to the /usr/src/kernels/2.6.9-42.0.2.EL-i686 (this is where the kernel is located on this PC) then issued a make menuconfig command It took me to through the menu and under device drivers> character device drivers i chose the Real time clock support as a module. Then exited out of the menu and did make modules_install. Then rebooted. However, the PC while rebooting showed some messages like fast_rtc: lost around 26 interrupts at 8192Hz. this keeps on appearing on the screen for a while before reboot and after the system reboots, I see that at boot time, the ethernet interface does not come up. It gives the follwoing error: Device eth0 has a different MAC address than expected, ignoring. Also i get the following error messages : Cannot open /lib/modules/2.6.9-42.0.2.EL/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/ microcode.ko no such file or directory and cannot open lib/modules/2.6.9-42.0.2.EL/kernel/drivers/net/sunrpc/sunrpc.ko no such file or directory. if I do an updatedb command and then slocate microcode.ko, I still see it under this directory. However, if I navigate to the kernel directory under 2.6.9-42.0.2.EL , there is nothing under it. If i issue ls -al there are a totoal of 16 entries but I cant see them. Can any one please tell me how to revert back to the original configuration or to undo these changes? I have copied the config-2.6.9-42.0.-EL release from Centos site to the /boot thinking it would revert to the original default config. Then I rebooted the PC but I still get the error-Eth interface has a different MAC id than expected or unable to bring eth0 up. So, at the boot time, I am currently choosing the kernel version 2.6.9-32-EL. With this I am able to browse the Internet. But I want to make the version 2.6.9-42-EL up. Please some one help me!! Reg. PPPoE server installation

Hi all, I am trying to install the PPPoe server rp-pppoe-3.8 from Roaring penguin on centos PC (Centos 4.3, Kernel release 2.6.9-34.EL) but not able to start it. When I start it it gives the error-- /etc/rc.d/init.d/pppoe status pppoe-status: Link is down (can't read pppd PID file /var/run/pppoe.conf-pppoe.pid.pppd) ror - /etc/rc.d/init.d/pppoe start Bringing up PPPoE link................TIMED OUT /usr/sbin/pppoe-start: line 191: 4703 Terminated $CONNECT "$@" >/dev/null 2>&1 [FAILED] Please let me know how to fix this. kickstart install NVIDIA binary driver

Hi all, I am wanting to add to my working kickstart post section grabbing the NVIDIA binary and installing it. I can grab the file thats not the problem. I can use the --x-module-path to pass to the binary installer... however, How do I get the correct module path, kernels are added the the yum update, and a new one comes along and wish to account for that. What is the correct way to know which path to provide to the installer. Process is in kickstart post: yum -u update copy NVIDIA binary init 3 install the NVIDIA binary with either the current kernel module path or if yum update grabbed a new kernel then use that module path.. Also is there anyway in the post section to do do a "CTRL+ALT+F3" Thanks, Jerry

Changing ext3 Partition Size

I have an ext3 partition from our SAN. The size was increased. I am attempting to re-size this specific ext3 partition, obviously. I unmount the partition, run fdisk, change the cyls, and save... WARNING: Re-reading the partition table failed with error 22: Invalid argument. The kernel still uses the old table. The new table will be used at the next reboot. And that is the message that I receive after I attempt the save. I did attempt a reboot to see if it did anything, but it did not help. Thanks, Scott

Is there a way in a shell script to switch virtual consoles? I want to switch to virtual console 3 using a command line . How do I do that? jerry
