Is it Me? Printing to a Windows Printer works like a charm under 4.4 but I can't get it working under 5.0 (yes, I read the documentation).

Problem upgrading CentOS 4.4 installation

Hi all, I'm trying to upgrade a Dell Inspiron 5000e laptop with CentOS 4.4 installed. When dependencies is checked I receive error "Cannot unmount CD /mnt/sources...". I have CD media and I have tried both text and graphical installer. Anyone have a clue ? Maybe the spec for this laptop is to weak and I must stick with my 4.4 installation... 700Mhz 512Mb ram. When I use the graphical installer, the X server starts but does not display correctly. It is possible to use but you have to guess what and where to click sometimes. Jens

CentOS 5 gotchas

As some folks on irc have pointed out, and has been covered a bit in the beta discussions: There is no longer a 'Minimal' install option for centos5 in anaconda, however if you choose 'Customize Now' and uncheck all the selections, you will get a minimal install that only requires disk1, and weighs in at around 594MB. With kickstart it is possible to further reduce the package set. Also, for folks who are used to using vga=foo type settings as kernel options, support for this appears spotty on the initial release, and this is an upstream issue as well. Bugs have been filed in the appropriate place. For now, the workaround for some folks is to remove the 'rhgb quiet' kernel options. For others, no amount of vga= trickery seems to work. A working SIP Phone for Centos44?

I tried numerous but most of them just don't work. They fail on the quality of the microphone. I tried two that support alsa. Kphone does, but dtmf (the numbers) are not recognized by Asterisk :-( I tried X-lite, but that has really terrible voice quality (mic). I tried Sflphone (has alsa support) and that worked on FC4 (not on FC3) and it does not work on Centos44 either: [root@raaf ~]# rpm -i sflphone-qt-0.6.2-1.i386.rpm error: Failed dependencies: libstdc++.so.6(GLIBCXX_3.4.4) is needed by sflphone-qt-0.6.2-1.i386 sflphoned is needed by sflphone-qt-0.6.2-1.i386 yum provides libstdc++.so.6 libstdc++.i386 3.4.6-3.1 installed Matched from: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6 [root@raaf ~]# ll /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 18 Mar 9 05:56 /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6 -> libstdc++.so.6.0.3 I'm lost. It complains about something missing that is installed?? I try to find a softphone that works with Asterisk and Centos44, does anyone has a good suggestion or is it better to buy a hardphone? Greetings CentOS developers, users, and addicts! As per earlier post, a CentOS 5 linux text install does install just fine using *only* the 1st CD (1 out of 6) if you go to custom software selection and deselect everything... very sweet!!! the same cannot be said of the default "just hit enter" GUI install... (no, I am not knocking or putting down what we were just so graciously handed by the developers) BTW, thank you CentOS Developers!!! You rock! Very smooth install on an old DL360 with Dual 1.266 GHz processors and 4 Gig DRAM, a 128M Smart Array 5304 caching controller and qty (2) 36.4 Gig 15000 rpm SCSI drives in hardware RAID1 Sweeeeeeeetttttttt... I cannot believe how SNAPPY CentOS 5 is... Sweeeeeeetttttttttt.... So excited, I just ordered some more multiprocessor toys to install it on next week. Using nVidia driver, screensaver issues

The nVidia driver is running right, but now when I try to select some screensavers, like Anemotaxis, X restarts. /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old show it aborting on a signal 11... These 3 (now wrapped) lines show up in the system log... Read performance on software RAID1?

Hi, Since the data is available in two places on a RAID1 array does the code in any way make use of that for improved performance by reading (different) data form both disks at the same time? Or is the one disk simply a slave that just receives copies of the data and is never really read from at all? Thanks

NVidia Quadro4 200/400 NVS CentoOS 4.4

I've put a Nvidia Quadro card in my machine. It was first detected as Quadro4 200/400 NVS. I have the pigtail for dual monitors. I've tried tweaking the xorg file to get it working, to no avail. So I then downloaded the 9631 version driver from Nvidia. The readme for the newer files said that they didn't support this card. I run the installer, it builds the module, but gets stopped at "-1 Invalid module format" Now, what to do? -- --- David Woyciesjes

CentOS 4.4 LiveCD instructions

I'm upgrading my current RedHat9 installation to CentOS 4.4, so decided to buy the 4.4 LiveCD (rather than downloading and burning an ISO). I thought the LiveCD was simply a 'reduced' version and that I could install from it, but I find I don't actually know what to do with it and can't find any relatively simple instructions (I'm a bit of a newbie to linux but think it's great!). Any advice gratefully received - thanks. Andy
