Upgrade from 3.x to 4.x via yum

Sorry for the noob question. I am trying to upgrade an older server from 3.x to 4.x via yum. Yum is resolving the original 3.x repositories and does not appear to be moving to 4.x due to the fact it still wants to use a 2.4.x kernel. Do I need to point yum to another set of repos in order to upgrade versions? Thanks -jeff

Relocating /boot and /

Due to the peculiar way that my root drive is configured (incomplete advance planning for Windows to Linux conversion), I have had thoughts about moving /boot and / to a different place on the drive. Current configuration is: sda1 - 30Gb primary partition (was the E: drive) sda2 - 120 Gb primary partition (was my H: drive) sda3 - 100Mb /boot primary partition sda4 - Extended partition sda5 - 4Gb swap partition sda6 - 145Gb / partition I was thinking about rearranging the disk to a more conventional layout where /boot is first, swap next, / next and the rest after that. It probably isn't necessary since the drive runs fine (well, almost - last night /boot developed a weirdity in its superblock and I had to recover with the install DVD in rescue mode and using the alternate superblock, but it's back up and running, having survived the boot fsck), but I was wondering if anyone had tried something like this before. Besides, having a backup (or new) /boot might not be a bad idea after last night.... Are there any serious advantages/disadvantages to having /boot in the middle of the disk and / after it? I was thinking that I could remove the 1 & 2 partitions, recreate them with a hole in between for a (new/replacement) swap, and copy the original partitions to the new locations, then update the grub.conf and voila! (I would hope....) I'm also wondering about complications from having the swap and / partitions inside the extended partition.... Comments / suggestions / feedback (preferably polite) welcome. Samba PDC

I have Centos 4.4 setup as samba PDC with LDAP, With Xp pro clients im able to join the domain, but W2k clients allways fails, with some error messages with wrong username password, even that I use the same username password as when joining the XP pro client to the domain Tronn

building rpms

Hello, I've got a centos 4.4 box and i'd like to make some rpms for it. My first task is to recompile an srpm removing some options to customize it. I tried rpmbuild, which worked on a fedora install, but that command wasn't available. What rpm do i have to install to make rpms? I've got rpmdb, rpm, and rpm-libs already installed. I thought the missing one was rpm-utils, but no go. Thanks. Dave.

Headers update frequency in local repo

Hi all, I'm trying to build a local repo as a mirror of basic repos ([Basic], [Update],[Addons], [Extras],[CentOSPlus]) and popular third part repos ([Dries],[DAG] and [kbs]). The doubt I have is ¿Is needed that I regenerate the repo headers [1] every time when I've updated the local mirror repo [2]? [1] Eliminate old headers and generate new ones with createrepo script. [2] I'll use rsync tool to syncronice the repos. Thanks in advance.

time command

Hi I am wanting to time how long it takes a couple commands to run. I can do "time command" and it tells me. How do I do multple commands at a time. I tried: time command; command no good time "command; command" no good I can make a script I guess but thought there was a more elegant way. Thanks, jerry

2 isp in one server

Hi, is it possible to have 2 different ISP in one server? i have 2 NIC cards im going to config ISP1 in NIC1 and ISP2 in NIC2? what should be the configuration for this setup?

Updates?

I just installed CentOS 4 on a new server and now I'm looking for updates that have been released. I like to keep a local mirror of all the updates so I can apply them to other machines easier/faster (this of course assuming I end up installing CentOS on more servers.) So, where are those updates mirrored? With RH/FC, I can hit any mirror and rsync the updates folders.
